Ags I'm wanting to get back into wakeboarding and try wakesurfing. Need some help. I like this 2018 Malibu Wakesetter 21 VLX. Curious if anyone has experience with this boat. I'm no pro wakeboarder so I just want a fun boat to land some jumps etc. Thanks!

I don't know anything about ski boats, but it's real shiny! I bet if you can pilot an Apache, you can pilot a boat! Sorry, I'm no help

Anything Malibu will have a good enough wake for a beginner-intermediate wakeboarder. That particular boat will leave something to be desired if you want to surf though.

That boat is not going to create a wave with enough push to surf like you'd want, imo.

Malibu makes a great boat, but is it the right boat for you?

Need to know what type of water you're using it on (big, busy, windy lake / skinny water) and how big of a crew you take out.

Are you just doing board sports or is tubing and skiing also important?

ETA: Bull isht on a VLX not surfing. Sure it's not a 23' G designed specifically for surfing, but I can't count the miles I've surfed behind mid 90s sport Nautiques and early 00 direct drive Malibu's.

Thanks! I've watched many videos of folks surfing behind it. Clearly I could spend much more and go all out but at this time I'm just wanting to get started without dropping 200k. If I change my mind in the future I'll upgrade. Boat is in almost new condition with 72 hours. Hard to beat this imo.

Crew 4-8

I will be on Lake Georgetown 90% of the time. Small lake.

Tubing - water skiing - rarely.

Surf and wake boarding - often

I'm taking it for a test run at the lake in the next day or 2.

Any brands you'd avoid? They pushed an ATX on my and I don't know much about them.

ATX is the cheaper Tige(both Texas made boats) just like Axis is to Malibu. Same hulls and powertrains as the higher end brands I believe, just less bells and whistles. If you ever see a black and grey Tig with a Texas flag flying on Georgetown, come say hello!

Tried a dm but it didn't go thru. Houston area neighbors are selling their 2021 malibu 23 mxz. It has less than 100 hours and well maintained.
Can forward contact if interested.

Great boat. That was the 1st or 2nd year of the resigned 21 VLX hull. Plenty of power with a Raptor 410 (same engine typically seen in the 23 LSV, so you get a higher power-to-weight ratio in the VLX). Surf wave is great; not as big or as much push as the bigger LSV/MXZ/M-series, but unless you're in the top 5% of wake surfing talent you won't outgrow it. Comfortable boat with up to 8ish people in it; you're tripping over each other and bumping elbows with more than that.

If you buy from a dealer I would recommend inquiring about a 3rd-party extended warranty and ask specifically if they cover the 2 touchscreens on the dash. If they fail you're looking at several thousand dollars each to replace.

good choice! We love our Nautique!
