Lorena General Store - Steak night?

I'm guessing plenty of folks on here have been. Is the steak really that good? I've seen it featured in YouTube videos and it seems like everyone raves about it. It's about an hour and a half from us, so looking to confirm the drive would be "worth it".

Would I be able to hold a spot in line for my wife and her Mom ahead of opening the doors (i.e. could they wait in the car)? They wouldn't be able to stand in a line for very long, especially my soon to be 90 M-I-L. If we arrive later, say 7ish, is there still a long wait to get seated? Just looking for any tips for the best strategy to avoid a long wait, especially standing in line.

Went after seeing it on the travel shows, when I was in the area.

In my opinion it isn't worth it. There was nothing special about it.

We love the steak and the whole experience. You can get your name on a list to be called when your table is ready. It is BYOB. We also bring our own wine glasses. There's usually a rush at first which sort of levels out after 7ish.

Leona General Store?

It's fun. I go every year for my birthday and went recently with a couple buddies. Get there at 4:45, they open at 5:30. It's a good time and an easy drive from Houston

If we are taking Leona General Store…I think it is worth the hype! We have been a few times. Half the fun is waiting in the line with a cooler, but totally understand your MIL not being able to handle the heat. If you get there early enough it is shaded and there are benches to sit at. I don't think anyone in line would have an issue with them "cutting" once the doors open.

The steak is really good, but the sides might be even better. Really good cobbler for dessert. My wife got the chicken and it was great as well.

All in all…fun experience to do every once in a while.

It's a solid steak and a good value price. It's no frills. The salad is simple. The potatoes and roll are simple. After the initial line dies down you can walk up. The place is much bigger than it looks.

Whatever size you ask for, expect a couple of oz over than. Like the steak, the desserts are large.

Worth it. The later in the evening it gets whatever size steak you order is going to be huge.

I think its worth it. The steaks seem to be bigger than what they advertise, the 10oz feels/looks more like a 14oz.

We enjoyed it but not the drive home after.

It is a decent steak, but not Republic by any means. The experience was fun, and I would go again if someone else had to drive. LOL

Been to Leona a couple of times, and stood in line like everyone else. I was disappointed; my steak was tough and not very good quality. I would not waste the drive there is better quality closer to home.

Leona is a cool experience. Bring a cooler. Pick up a bottle of wine next door. Hang out for steaks cut to order at a very reasonable price. It may not be the best steak you've ever had. Yeah the Republic is better. But I'm not dropping $200 when I go to Leona.

I'm sure the experience is fun, but seems like a really long way to go for a good but not great steak.

It's a cool experience. Show up around 6:30 after the first wave is starting to depart. We usually only wait 10-20 minutes.

I've been twice and I would disagree with those disparaging the quality. Is it high end steakhouse quality - no. Is it really good - yes.
In February, when I was last there, I ordered a 16oz. I ate all I could and took the rest home. Before I ate the leftovers I weighed it - 12oz left. All for the princely sum of $42.

The first time I went I thought I was living the Cafe scene from Hell or Highwater! If you don't know - google the scene.

I dont get the hype. I have been a few times, as I from that area. I would not drive 1.5hrs for it. I would go to Taste of Texas if anything.

Taste of Texas is almost 2 hours from us and that would mean driving through Houston going and coming. No thanks! Plus I would be spending way more to eat there than Leona General Store.

I'll pick on the Republic and Taste of Texas since both of those have been brought up on this thread. Both are great restaurants/steak houses....Leona General Store is not that type of place. It is a laid back, casual, country place in the middle of nowhere. In my opinion the food is really, really good...but I understand it may not be everyone's cup of tea...especially if you are expecting a fine dining/big city experience.

It's about 45 minutes from us...well worth the drive every once in a while!
