locked out of Gun Safe - am I SOL?

Just got this Safari safe from FB MP. The deal was great because it needed a new keypad. I unplugged the existing keypad, and took a two day business trip. Came home to the new keypad sitting on my desk.

I went to install it and turned the hand to open the unlocked safe. Locked it.

I'm waiting for a locksmith to call me back. Am I completely hosed? I have a new keypad and lock, so if drilling into it is necessary, can I use them to get back up and running or is the safe useless?

I'm new to safes and feel like an idiot.

I think all you have to do is plug in the new keypad.

Not sure if it would work but I would tape a stiff Rod like a splint to that wire at the plug and make sure the orientation was right and then try to put it in the socket on the board or module inside through the hole.. Looks like an ample hole, though it will require some patience. Once it's in you can open the door and then remove the rod.

There should be a loose wire that connects from the safe's electronics to your new keypad. If you have something you can stick into the hole and fish that wire out you can connect it to your keypad. However, you would need the last combination programmed into the old keypad for it to unlock. Or perhaps its opposite, the wire may originate from your new keypad to the safe's electronics. In that case you may be hosed.

Yeah, I just watched a YT video and the wire goes from keypad to locking mechanism, not from lock to keypad.

This is worth trying. Do you know the old lock combination? I would assume so if you had the door open previously.

After looking at my Cannon lock you may be hosed. The hole in the door where the wire is passed thru to the locking mechanism is located below where you need to plug it in. So you would need the wire to come up and over and then down to the lock to plug it in. Not impossible but nearly so. However, if you detached the connection at the old keypad and not at the locking mechanism its a simple matter of just making that connection to your new keypad and entering the old code.

Now you know that if you are working on your keypad or locking mechanism to open the safe, then turn the handle placing the bolts in the locked position. Now you cannot close the door but you also cannot lock yourself out.

I believe that those safes have a key as well (looks like an old school long key about 6 inches long) you insert it in that round hole.

Oof…this is extra sucky if true.

Yeah, but looking at his safe I don't see the key hole.

On mine you insert it in that round hole that you can see between the two screws in his pic. The key is pretty long as the mechanism is fairly deep in the door.
ETA: looking at it that whole does look pretty small so I have no idea if it is the same or not.

I don't think this will work. I've replaced a few locking mechanisms and none had a key hole. Can you imagine if all you had to do was slide the keypad off the posts and insert a key to gain access? For modern safes the hole is strictly for the electronics.

Get you a dial lock on your next safe.

We got locked out of our safe several years back and found a guy in San Antonio who drove down to our ranch in the Laredo area. He replaced the digital mechanism with a combination spin lock. It was pricey but he got us back into our safe.

Got it figured out. Now I need a 5" Ag sticker for it

Did you cut that out with a hole saw? You may be able to glue the metal back in place with some JB Weld, then cover it up with a sticker. At least it would prevent someone from knowing you had a weak spot in the door unless they removed the sticker.

Way to MacGyver it.

Where are you located? If you take the door off and bring it to me, I can tack weld the hole saw piece back on without much heat damage, for a case of beer. I'll need a few beers to steady my hand!

Prosper/Celina. Super generous offer; thank you. Was planning JB Weld

I would place this directly on my scrap pile. I'm pissed off on your behalf seeing those pics. Labor day coming up. Safe sales aplenty. Some have military discounts on top of the sale price if you are a veteran. If you aren't, find a buddy who is.

Might be the perfect spot for a Doss sticker.

Hat tip on figuring it out.
I feel so much better since about 11 a.m. CT on 20 Jan. 2025
