I'm talking about it when it's said in relation to loss of life or tragedy.
I don't like it because it implies the universe or a deity has decided your tragedy was necessary. Your situation or loved one was selected by a deity or the universe as a worthy sacrificial tribute to some master plan.
It's just a crappy concept to me. Bad things happen because bad things happen or someone f-ed up big time and you paid dearly for it.
If someone has to say something to take up awkwardness, just say "Man, that sucks." or "We'll say a prayer for you/them/etc".
