What is the advertised purpose of the lights with the filters so you can't see the green until you are basically at the line, but the yellow and red are visible from the normal distance?

I get it if the intersection is not 90 degrees, but they installed one by my house and it is a normal spacious intersection

I think it's because the vast majority of drivers are stupid and shouldn't be driving, so the theory is that it forces people to slow down as they approach and enter the intersection in an attempt to reduce accidents caused by idiot drivers who think instagramming and facebook live streaming is more important than driving.

They fail to address the problem of random people slowing down and causing issues behind them in traffic though.

Not sure but it FEELS like they're trying to keep you guessing and on your toes. You cant see it so you naturally start to ease up. More "Traffic Calming". To me, there is nothing more frustrating than a timid driver in front of you that slows for a green light.

is there another intersection close to this one, maybe immediately out of frame behind where this picture was taken? Often these are used where you can see two lights at once and it would be dangerous to mis-read a green in the second intersection as a green for the first.

No.

This intersection sucks. It's made like this to keep people traveling on Mason going west slow down through the intersection. Could be because there are so many driveways immediately west of the intersection.

HATE IT.

I guess if you consider someone getting these lights confused, then sure

I will add this to the list of examples that I do not believe traffic engineers are real people or have ever driven on a road.

That's the second light as you go south under Grand Parkway. The shade is there so that when the first light turns red, you don't accidentally look past the light immediately in front of you (the 1st one at the west-bound frontage, or feeder for you Houston fatties) and see the green light beyond it, prompting you to run the red light.

That pic illustrates the point. 1st light is turning yellow/red, second light is staying green to clear traffic out from under the overpass.

It's certainly possible that the shade is not adjusted properly and should provide more visibility approaching the intersection with the east-bound frontage.

The few times I've seen this was when there were two traffic lights close together. Don't want people reacting to what the second light is doing when they are at the first light.
