Texas is among the worst states for public hunting. For as big as we are, and as many hunters as we have, the public hunting opportunities are poor. Access to the majority of the public lands is terrible. Most are so overgrown you can't walk in to them, yet we aren't allowed to clear anything. Food and water on those same areas are questionable at best. They boast they have over a million acres of public hunting lands available but how much of that is actually usable?

Texas is about 97-98% privately owned, which is far superior than having most of your "state" owned by the feds.

And the definition of "usable" is subjective. Fact of the matter is that most people want an easy-peasy drive up to the blind, shoot a deer and go home hunt when public land hunting is anything but that.

I'll apply the same logic to leases as well. No doubt that lease fees have gone up a stupid amount, but there is a very large contingent of people that claim they don't care about horns that won't even look to hunt in an area not called south Texas at the same time. Because they want the horns, they just love to talk about how they are meat hunters and only hunt for the experience, etc.

I was fortunate to be the General Manager for this property back in the mid 80's after leaving Aggieland. Great quail, dove, turkey and hog hunting. Had a few big Mulies and WT especially down by the river. Got some great pics of several WT while doing the aerial surveys. Still have a large bobcat on a shelf that I called up and shot. The fishing was not bad at all. Tons of rattlers. We killed 28 in one morning of a quail hunt. Everyone decided to shoot clays that evening. It was part of Sugarloaf Hunting Club which was then a total of 18k acres. The rest of it recently sold. Had some great times out there before it went into foreclosure due to a massive embezzlement scheme at Vernon Savings and loan. Long story but it should have been on 60 minutes. A bunch of guys went to jail including the 4 primary owners of the club. The stool pigeon who turned over evidence died in a fiery plane crash after his release from prison.
Too bad they removed it from the list.

The State also deeded a lot of land to railroad companies to bribe them to lay rail in the state. But that was a couple of years ago.

We get it, you worship the state and want to be governed harder. Most of us in here are not like that, though, just a heads up.

Easy fix; increase hunting license fee.
It takes a special kind of brainwashed useful idiot to politically defend government fraud, waste, and abuse.

You're a bold one, newb. Broad and incorrect assumption on your part.

You're pissed because you can't turkey hunt Tea Cup this season. Did you bother to ask why? If so, you and I received the same answer. If you did ask and received a response, what part of it is unreasonable to you?

If you didn't, why come and ***** about it on a message board without gathering some intel?

TPWD pulled rifle hog from Somerville. I asked why, they gave me an answer. I don't necessarily agree with it but when folks don't show up to hunt, so be it.

Good luck Hagerman this spring.

What were the reasonings? In my experience, they always easily fiind reasons to limit access. But rarely find a reason to ever open it back up. Classic government, foot in the door, that should always be challenged. Just because they give you a reason, doesn't make it legitimate.

Email Kelly at TPWD who runs the public hunt program and ask away.
