Sort of outdoors, but I imagine posters here own a lot of garage freezers. What's a good brand that can hold up in a hot Texas garage? Ideally a standing freezer but other styles will be considered.

Don't have an opinion on brand but you gotta go stand up. Chest freezers are only good if you want to try 10 year old, freezer burned meat one day.

The door to our stand up freezer kept being left not tightly shut. It happened more than once. We lost a lot of perishables. When we cleaned out the freezer we found 6 Wagyu T bones we didn't know we had.

I love our chest freezer.

I have two garage ready upright freezers. A Kenmore in the garage at home that has been there for 12 years and a Whirlpool at our South Texas ranch. Both have been great, but I will say the Whirlpool holds up in some harsh conditions. The wizard who designed the skinning rack and covered area at our ranch enclosed the East and South facing walls and left the West and North sides open. I installed the Whirlpool in 2020 and it's been dealing with the afternoon and setting sun hitting it every day for 5 years and it still works perfectly. Buy a garage ready one and you'll be fine.

I just bought a Sears Coldspot chest freezer for the garage at an estate sale - $100 for 22 cubic ft - we will see what happens but I am excited and figured worth a shot

Cheapest used one you can find has served me well for 20 years. I now have 2. One is old school that I got for free off TexAgs and another from someone moving out of a dorm for $100. Both have lived in Texas garages their whole lives. Both are no name brands. No issues.

Whichever one you buy make sure you get a YoLink to monitor your temperature boat smartphone.

What makes a freezer "garage ready?" Extra insulation?

Like others have said, I have a chest freezer I bought from a friend for $50, 10 years ago. Still going strong. Couldn't even tell you what brand it is.

I bought a self closing latch and a cheap thermostat with an alarm to address this issue.

The advantages of a stand up are definitely worth the effort. Way easier to organize and to get to items in a stand up freezer. Also, smaller footprint for more freezer space.

Chest freezer user here. All you need is some basic shallow wire baskets to make chest freezers easy. Sort it by cuts. That way you can easily move stuff around and get to the stuff on the bottom.

Also I eat 2-3 deer a year so by the time season comes around I'm empty or close to it. I give away whatever I have left before season starts.

They are more energy efficient and a lot less prone to someone leaving the door open.

The only one I could find during the China Flu era was an Insignia from Best Buy, big upright. Knock on wood it's been rock solid after 5 yrs.
I don't think you know me.

One thing no matter what buy, make it so you can move it to clean the grills/vents easily. Most garage have more dust and will clog up more quick than an inside freezer.

Chest freezer went out last year (maybe 4 years old) with elk, AK fish and other good stuff.

Standup built for garage conditions is my recommendation.

I gave my sister a GE refrigerator I bought at the Lubbock Circuit City in 1999. It's been in her garage for the past 20 years and still going strong.

We have a Sears Coldspot standup freezer from 1970 that still runs like a top on my Dad's back porch. I need to lay claim to that before my sister gets ahold of it.

I've had a stand up freezer in my garage for about 2 years

My parents have a coffin freezer and stand up freezer in their barn for about 3-4 years. All of them have worked perfectly fine in the Texas heat. Between the three, we can store over 2,000 pounds of meat.

I think it boils down to personal preference/space available.

Same thing with my beer fridge in the garage. Couldn't tell you what any of the brands are, but have never had any issues. Just make sure the door closes all the way.

Cheapest upright one they have. Mine have all seemed to work fine.
