We said goodbye to Willow today. She had two serious seizure Friday night and Saturday morning. It became clear in the days after her cognitive function was impaired. She was walking a goat trail around the house for hours on end without stopping until she collapsed from exhaustion. We had to crate her for the first time in 12 years and there was no coming back from what she was experiencing. She was mostly blind at the end and we had to consider her quality of life. Keeping her alive meant "managing" her condition with trazadone and being a zombie dog is certainly no quality of life.
We took her for a wagon ride to see some of her favorite things in the neighborhood and I made her a nice wagyu steak with ice cream for dessert as her last meal. She really got after that steak like she had never eaten before. We gave her the best day we could give her, given the lack of time to prepare and held her as she went on to be with her big sister, CJ.
For the first time in 15 years, there are no beagles in my house. I'm drowning my feelings in a bottle of Highland Park and a box of chocolate croissants.
