I regularly fish Burton/Carter creek in BCS and am able to catch some decent eating size channel cats. Y'all think they would be safe to eat, or are they going to be full of chemicals and other contaminants?

Some would argue that no catfish is safe to eat.

They are tasty tho.

Once we ate bullheads out of one of the Research Park ponds.

No way would I eat a fish out of there. The wastewater treatment plant off of Spring Loop regularly has spills into it.

I wouldn't eat it due to all pesticides, herbicides, etc running out of people's yards. All the crap running off the streets too. If you do, make sure to trim all the red fat off. Most of the contaminants are stored in the fat.

Zero chance I eat anything out of that. Enjoy the fishing, throw them back, get your catfish at HEB for 7 bucks a pound.

You will be fine. Just don't do it often.

Still probably better than farm raised.

Eat the hell outta them

if something goes wrong, let us know, though, if you don't mind

Caught a lot of sunfish, small cats and dink bass off burton creek, and whatever creek runs on Inlow Blvd that flows into it while I was up there. Definitely wouldn't eat out of it regularly, but my roommate did a couple times and he's still living lol. Probably a lot of pesticides and runoff in that creek.

Do you eat fish out of the brazos ?

My concern is burton/carter are down stream of old elf atochen and the lakes around it.

Where do y'all think the catfish at Heb come from? Some pristine mountain-top lake maybe? lol.

unfortunately, every river and creek in our area has sewage treatment plant runoff and herbicide/ pesticide runoff.

ETA that plenty of bay fishing guides are catching trout and redfish now in what is basically the Houston Ship Channel above Baytown. I'm definitely not eating those fish but don't think some don't make it into our local food supply.

Screw it, eat the fish. You gotta die of something, and it won't likely be from a few catfish here and there.

I mean, that creek runs through ALL of Bryan. You will probable hook some dirty diapers, stolen tires and rims, and the occasional dead methhead. Eat any fish at your own risk.

Your edit is along the lines of what I was thinking.

I've been eating fish from the coast all of my life. All off these rivers eventually go down and empty into out bays. And God knows how much more pollutants they pick up along the way.

Well I hate to be the one that disappoints you on this, but the Redfish both served in restaurants and those sold at HEB and even fish markets, aren't wild caught fish. They are farm raised. If you could find specks, which i'm not sure you even can, same would be true.
