Looking to go on an Alaskan caribou hunt. Anyone have recommendations on the trip. Either semi DIY or outfitted.

If you are willing to consider a hunt outside of Alaska, I would HIGHLY recommend mountain caribou with Kawdy Outfitters in Northern BC. Different owners than when I went there in 2011, but an outstanding hunting area and from what I hear, the new guys are really good too.

Would you be willing to tell us more about your trip with Kawdy Outfitters?

Well darn. Here's the original hunt report thread, but it looks like the pics aren't available anymore.

What was the cost for the caribou and the moose? I'm assume a lot of inflation since then but moose and caribou are high on my list…but concerned they are dtupid expensive

Sounds like an awesome trip! Thanks for sharing again. I must have missed it the first time around.

We hunted caribou in Alaska in 2018. DIY using Ram Aviation for air transfer and gear rental. Those guys were great. Glad we went when we did…prices have nearly doubled, but if you can find a way to make it work, you won't regret it.

That's been almost 15 years ago, but I want to say the combo hunt was around $15k back then. If I was a betting man, I'd venture to say around $25-28k now.

I went with Arrowhead - you can search and find my thread, I would not return personally with them.

If I was going to do it again, I'd consider Ram Aviation.

Prices have skyrocketed last 5 years

I feel like 99% of us have been priced out of moose and grizzly at this point

I second Ram and also Golden Eagle Outfitters. I cannot stress enough how important it it to utilize trusted and reputable transporters/outfitters and there are lots who aren't. RAM and GEO are two of them who are top notch.

If you're considering a DIY, have you hunted Alaska before?

No to been to Alaska. The semi guided like using ram is what I am leaning. I have been researching a lot of guys just drive up dalton highway and take off into the tundra. That is a bit more western than I am looking for. But hey sounds like an adventure.

You won't go wrong with Ram. I'd stay away from Arrowhead. Problem with Ram is much of the area is virtually inaccessible to you as a non-subsistence hunter currently the federal land closures in Unit 23. Not sure when you plan to go, but, perhaps the herd numbers will rise to a level that will trigger reopening those lands before you do. Even so, there are State lands that are open and unit 26 is an option. Lots of history here to learn if you haven't.

I asked if you've been because I'd recommend a DIY for sure, but really more to those with Alaska experience. The Brooks range is a wild and can be formidable place.

Golden Eagle is another awesome outfitter to look into. They have two areas: Kotzebue and Delta Junction. The latter services the 40 mile herd. Great dependable people who will put you in a good spot.

Happy to discuss more sometime if you like. I am headed to AK tomorrow for a moose hunt so if I don't respond, that's why.

Meanwhile, if you haven't, you should utilize the Huntin Fool guys as a resource too. A $100 annual membership is required for 1/1 consulting but they will have good info and recommendations.
