I ordered a new 6.5 Creedmoor for the same reason yall buy them.. just wanted something new. I started doing some research after purchase for the right ammo and saw some mixed reviews and that its great at long range but some of the bullets do weird things on closer shots.
Most of my shots are whitetail at <200 yards.
Can someone help with some real life ammo suggestions ?
I shoot Hornady ELDX 143 Precision Hunter in my Creedmoor. Everything it's shot died in a reasonable amount of time, but I wasn't in love with the distance of some of the tracking or the seeming lack of "knockdown". I swear the rounds were going so fast at 100-120 yards that they didn't expand much (almost a through and through).
So, we cut 4" off the barrel, threaded it, and it is now much more affective at "Texas " distances in my opinion. It went from being another gun, to my favorite gun in the safe (Bergara B14 for reference). I put that gun on a critter, that critter goes to sleep where it is shot. Full confidence.
I am no Ballistic guru, but I honestly feel like to velocity lost from cutting the barrel down from 24 to 20 provided better expansion/fragmentation of the bullet at the distance I normally hunt (inside 200). I know I might have lost some juice for long distance, but my old eyes will never shoot anything past 300 yards; and I imagine inside of 500 yards the difference is negligible.
Also, it shoots suppressed way better. With the 24" barrel plus suppressor it felt like i was hunting with a flagpole. The gun now balances beautifully and is a perfect size for me. If I am being honest, this is the real reason I initially cut the barrel down, the improved performance was a nice surprise.
Of course, I could be wrong. My opinion is worth what you pay for it.
