After watching the FPV one way drones being launched in Ukraine and Iran, has anyone thought about adding a high capacity shotgun to their collection? Watching these videos of drones chasing soldiers around trees only to see the poor guy stumble and then get grenaded really scares the **** out of me.

Having served in an infantry company in combat we were always comforted by friendly mortars, artillery or air cover to dissuade assaults. Unfortunately a $500 drone with a grenade doesn't give a damn and will blow you up without prejudice.

I've noticed a lot of soldiers are carrying shotguns to combat the drones. "And we thought flushing dove or pheasants were stressful. Can't imagine trying to shoot a drone down before it kills you.

Always up for an excuse to go bust clays or buy a new gun but shooting down fpv drones is pretty low on my list of concerns.

It sure is man made horror beyond our comprehension kind of stuff though.

Looks like they are making 5.56 drone ammo now. So load up a couple marked mags and keep on your kit for specific use against drones?

Drone Ammo

Good thing about drones is they have super fragile parts. Flight controller, camera lens, video transmitter, ESCs, props...It is a all works or all doesn't proposition here. One of the above goes down and you are either flying blind or falling out of the sky.

Bad news is you gotta hit them!

This is going to sound liberal and bleedy heart and chicken *****...but...

I think Colonel Potter said it pretty well "They keep inventing new ways to kill each other. Why can't they invent a way to end this stupid war."

Maybe we could use some R&D or AI to figure out how to negotiate situations where we don't need to kill everyone?

I know that is not at all possible...everything human beings do is based on greed and emotion, we are what we are...but it is a nice thought.

In direct response to the OP and video, assuming this is not some kind of AI fabricated video....I don't have any words other than "Yeah, f--- that."

Unless you are in the military or some sort of vessel currently attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, how on earth is this something that ranks in maybe the top-1000 things in your daily life to worry about?

I think the guy just wants to by a "high-capacity" shotgun and this sounds like something the wife would Ok to protect the family. More power to him and I am contemplating the same basic argument to my wife. I also am scared to death of random drones chasing me down while mowing the yard.

have you seen the Metalhead episode of "Black Mirror?"

ai, remote devices, and robotics are fearful beyond what we've seen in practice, YET. There's an industry "voluntary coalition" that has signed a pact that they won't weaponize their robots... but there's nothing really holding them (or anyone else) to it.

Unless they are down the road from you, you have little to worry about here. Range and transport of small drones like that will be a problem unless they come out with communications relays and a new kind of battery.

I agree with your sentiments but I'm a little more optimistic about the recent past. It's been over 50 years since Vietnam ended. We haven't had a a draft since then. We have had 5,000 combat deaths total since then, which is less than half of the total number of people drunk drivers killed last year alone.

I went deep into FPV drones two years ago. Built a 8" (prop diameter) drone that I personally made an 8 mile round trip. with 1000mw high power analog or DJI FPV, and ELRS radio protocol and lithium ion batteries, it is pretty simply. Now given...that doesn't include the weight of a warhead. But you could easily take a 1-way trip many miles for about $300-400 in parts and know how.

It's not over the horizon range but you can go far with a cheap drone.

I'm personally and currently not worried about it. I'm drinking wine, watching baseball and posting on texags. I am however thinking about it.

Anyone with a $1500 budget and explosives know how is going to be able to use this. That's what worries me.

I guess 3-gun shotguns can pull double duty, I may or may not have shot a sporting clay course with this one!

There is a system that can take control of this, and the vast majority of commercial and DIY drones, but it's a lot more expensive than a shotgun and only feds and law enforcement can use it legally.

Totally cool with FPV drones taking out equipment, ammo depots, etc

but the videos ive seen of them just dive bombing single soldiers is just....wrong

Not wrong at all. It's ugly and cruel, but that's war. Trade a $500 drone and a $50 grenade to keep my expensive, well-trained combat soldier out of the direct line of fire? I'm pushing that joystick all day long.

The fact that it is morale-crushing and terror-inducing on the enemy is just a bonus.

Been looking for a reason to buy a Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol! Surely my wife will be on board if I explain to her that we are not likely to be dive-bombed by a drone equipped with explosives on our evening family walks, but can never rule out the possibility with 100% certainty.

I envision having this conversation with her while she is in the shower and I am in a separate room, but I think everything will work out in the end.

You just need to get a buddy to harass you on a walk with her with a drone (unbeknownst to her of course).

You can then make a great argument for it.

On it. I've got a few buddies with big drones. We "need" this gun.

Some Nation invades Texas....... are you going to think it's "just wrong" to kill their soldiers by absolutely any means possible?

I wouldn't. They could have avoided getting killed by a dive bombing drone by staying the hell home.
