My MIL has a bunch of old silver coins. How much should I expect to get for pre 65 half dollars. She needs some cash for a plumbing job and has asked me to sell some. The local silver dealer is offering $15 bucks each. Is that a fair price? The math doesnt seem to add up. Asking here because you guys seem to know stuff. Thanks

look up current value of silver and weigh all the coins. That will give you a good ballpark value.

Pre 65 half dollars are 90% silver.

From AI

Quote:

Current Value of the 1960 Franklin Half Dollar
The value of the 1960 Franklin Half Dollar varies based on its condition and the current price of silver. Below is a breakdown of its estimated values:
Circulated vs. Uncirculated
Condition
Estimated ValueCirculated
$22.34
Uncirculated
$30.70
Factors Influencing Value
  • Silver Content: The coin is composed of 90% silver, which significantly impacts its value based on current silver prices.
  • Condition: Coins in better condition (uncirculated) command higher prices compared to those that are circulated and show signs of wear.
The values mentioned are reflective of the market as of now and can fluctuate with changes in silver prices.

15 from a reseller isn't bad. Isn't great. I would offer 20 if she was local to BCS because I would just hold them. Post location and you might get a decent offer on here. How many coins ?

spot is probably the very best you can do on ungraded.
More than likely less than spot based on the ups and downs of silver lately.

Probably a couple of hundred halves. Beaumont area. Lots of quarters and dimes

Depending on where your MIL lives, there may be groups (with churches usually) that can do simple plumbing work for free. Maybe ask in the Home improvement board, see what they may know.

Thank you. We had a camera run through the line and it is busted up. Tree too close to the line. Big problem is, it runs under her driveway. We plan to reroute the line with a new tie in so we dont have to go under the driveway. Vidor charges $900 bucks for a new tie in to the sewer line.

If she has 100 half dollars, that value would be just under $2800, being 44 oz of coin leaving 39.6 oz of silver at current rate.

I've been thinking about buying back some silver. I'll pay spot if she'll ship, that's better than any coin shop will do and probably as as you'll find on this board. Assuming they're mostly franklins and Kennedys?

I would hold. I think it'll go up.

Drop happened because people got scared or needed cash flow.
