I have treated some mesquites 2 years in a row, just checked on my land some of the trees look mostly dead, but might have a clump of leaves still growing. For instance a tree 10ft tall x 8ft wide, might have a branch that has a 2x2 area of a branch that has put leaves out…..
will these trees die?
I know sendero takes a while? Should I re treat?

Is that the only thing you are using? Or are you mixing with a surfactant? Oil? Etc...

If the tree is still putting out leaves in areas after being sprayed, it likely means the tree is still alive. Would re-spray that area when it's warmer.

For trees that big I don't know that sendero/any foliar spray is the best option, we generally use it for small trees that are around 3 ft or less. A tree that big we'd cut down and paint the stump with diesel/remedy mixture.

Remember to follow the directions closely on sendero, when it's warm enough, and use a surfactant.

I use used motor oil and diesel to mix with remedy. And you have to go all the way around the tree or that side will put out twigs. It's crazy but mesquites are super hardy.

We've got a lot of experience with remedy/diesel and sendero. AgFan's answer is the exact advice I'd give. If it appears dead except a small area, re-spray that area now. Usually Sendero causes the leaves to turn color within a week, particularly if soil temps are appropriate.

In the future, when they are that big, it's better to have them grubbed with a dozer with a grubber that will get the tap root or cut them and immediately paint the stump and 2-3 inches around the cut with diesel and remedy in a 75/25% mixture.

I've been cutting and spraying the stumps with sendero(1:10 dilution in water). It has worked well for me. Most of the trees are smaller than what you're describing.

Great advice, will hit them with sendero and surfactant again! Then next year any remaining , remedy diesel and chainsaw.
We started with probably had 2000 trees 3 years ago and are down to about 200 …. And of those 200 majority of them just has small areas leafing out.
Thanks guys….

Aren't you supposed to wait until the leaves have turned dark green before spraying?

Yes, should be applied when mesquite leaves are dark green and fully mature. This stage, usually 40 to 90 days post-bud break (June to September), ensures the plant is actively transporting carbohydrates, along with the herbicide, to the roots for better control.

I was referring to the color change after you spray the tree.
