You did the right thing. Common sense would dictate that.
Would someone really think a Glock would just be lost by someone……" Oh honey I was out walking and when I got home I realized my Glock was gone"….Really? Rest assured there was a reason it was lying where it was.
You did the right thing and set a good example for your son. Good dad.

Thank you.

I found a High Point pistol outside of Wheeler, TX back in 2013 and turned it into the sheriff given the property where I found it. The landowner's family was well-known by local law enforcement for a number of reasons and I had no idea what the pistol could have been used for with that group.

Had a G19 stolen out of my pickup in San Angelo eight years ago. Don't expect I'll ever get a call from the SAPD even after filing a report with them.

One of my diver buddies found a Sig 9mm in the tube chute here in NB last week. Loaded and still in the holster.

PD told him if no one claims it in a certain number of weeks (I forget) that he could claim it.

Someone was obviously floating the river packing and it is not the first one we have found in the Comal.

So, maybe you could claim it or maybe the cop he talked to was mistaken.

I think every time you find a gun, knife, large fork etc you're supposed to make a super obnoxious YouTube video about calling the cops and turning in a "possible murder weapon"

I believe found firearms that have not been reported stolen, if not claimed after calling registered owner can be claimed by finder. Most will file under insurance, and if later found I do not know the legal stance to take but would think it is fraudulent to take back. A jet ski found after a flood was reported and then was told they did not want it back because they filed with insurance. A little different with a weapon but could be the same.

Hmmmm. Had I been in your shoes in that situation, I probably would have taken my grandson out for ice cream and added the gun to my safe.

This right here.

I have a friend that's found a couple guns in their life and never turned the in. You'll never see them again. If the serial is ground off then it's not of any use anyway and if it's not, you can see if it's been reported stolen or lost while retaining possession. If so, the id turn it in but if not, finders keepers.

I've dealt with too many police departments and cops to feel good about turning something like that in vs just enjoying it.

To answer the OP, you won't get to keep the gun. The cop you gave it to will. It's probably already at his house. They will never call you and if you call them they will be perpetually investigating it. The guys down at the lab are working in shifts and all that.

Total BS

As already mentioned… do you really want an abandoned Glock 17 found in a park?

Don't keep a found gun. Even if it's not reported stolen now, it may be in the future. You would risk being charged for possession of stolen property. Ignorance will not be a good defense.

Guns are checked to ensure they haven't been used in a crime, unless it's an incompetent agency.

Recovered guns are returned to the owners. Many guns just aren't recovered.

Cop price on a G17 is under $400. Don't see many risking prison for that; Only someone dumb enough to keep a gun found in a suspicious place.

The Gerald Goins/HPD crooked cops are not common, but also not extinct.

They always need a drop gun.

I would have kept it and just leave it at the deerlease as a camp gun. youre not ever getting caught with that.
