This has become in increasing problem. Our city doesn't allow trash cans, so we have to put out trash bags only. At times there are 20-30 vultures tearing up trash bags in the neighborhood.

I have read that they won't mess with white bags or black ones, but these things don't care about color. Also, I've heard spraying ammonia on the bags will help, but not so far.

I asked ChatGPT but it doesn't really have an answer.

Anyone figured out how to get rid of them?

A few years ago I came home for lunch and there were about 40 of them in my trash. As I drove into the driveway they flew off over my house. When I walked inside I realized they had landed on the backside of my house and it looked like a haunted house. In that short time they had crapped all over the deck and roof. One was tearing up our doormat and others were eating pool noodles and tumping over an outside trash can. I threw a couple rocks that scared them up into the trees, but they didn't leave until I started using a BB gun. Unreal!

Motion detecting sprinklers on areas you want to keep them off of? Would suck to be a garbage man though

If you have the space to do so safely, a suppressed 22. They are very habit forming and no doubt, it's the same ones bouncing from house to house, day to day.

If it were me, Id be raising hell with the city and asking them what they were going to do about it since they don't allow trash cans. Where do you live? Never heard of something like that.

That's disgusting. Also you completely squandered the opportunity to use the term "committee" to describe your group of vultures

In my experience, they don't mess with trash that is on fire in a burn barrel

I'd use a low power BB gun. They're federally protected.

I had several dancing on my chimney one day making a ruckus and pissing my dogs off. I popped it with a Nerf gun and they haven't come back.

Put a fake owl, or two, out there.

Worked for our back porch.

We had to put "trash nets" over our trash bags in Newfoundland when I lived up there to keep birds from getting into the trash. Seemed to work. Granted, we didn't have buzzards though.

We would get these nets from Canadian tire

You can air soft them and not harm them but are you at hone all day to watch?

Seems like your stupid city rules need revision to deal with real world problems

There are two common type of vultures in Texas. One is the Turkey Vulture and the other is the Black Vulture. The Turkey Vulture has the characteristic red head. The Black Vulture has a black head and its wings are more rounded and typically have white tips on their wings. Behavior of the two is distinctly different. Black Vultures are much more aggressive than Turkey Vultures and have been known to attack freshly born animals. They are both Federally protected. However some states allow the killing of the Black Vulture because of its predative behavior......but NOT Turkey Vultures as they don't have the aggressive nature.
Some states allow permits for killing the Black Vulture if they are causing harm to livestock. The Turkey Vulture has a sense of smell. The Black Vulture does not.
You need to determine which specie is getting in your trash.....possibly both. The Black Vulture will oftentimes go where Turkey Vultures are because they will "steal" the food from the Turkey Vultures. So you need to eliminate the possibility of the Turkey Vultures "smelling" your trash. If the Turkey Vultures find the trash, then the Black Vultures may come as well cause they see the Turkey Vultures feeding.
Both species perform a very important function in cleaning up carrion....hence why they are protected.

I've seen Black Vulchers getting after trash in my neighborhood. It does seem they go after the white bags. Probably cause that's what most people use for food waste.

I've also seen crows doing the same.

ETA I've never seen turkey vulchers doing it.

Go to the pet store and get some mice. Feed them rat bait. Put the mice inside the bag and soon you won't have buzzards.

Lake Jackson... https://www.lakejackson-tx.gov/946/Trash-bags-vs-Trash-Cans

Most people actually like it (except for when vultures get in the bags).

And, we have unbelievable systems where we can put large trash (furniture) and brush (cut up trees and limbs) out twice a month for pickup at no extra charge. If you forget, then drive that stuff down to a place in town and you can offload the large trash yourself into a huge dumpster and put the brush and limbs on a chipping pile.

Ever been to Garner State park early in the morning? Same thing, trash everywhere. But enough about the people that go there, the birds make a big mess, too.

Learned response. They aren't stupid birds.
As with any "problem" animal….rather than the immediate OB "kill it" response….the simple solution is always to remove the food source….if the food ain't there or can't be got to they won't come.

He's putting his trash on the curb for collection. He's not in a wildlife preserve.

I think cities don't want the trash pickup guys / gals lifting the cans all day. Hence the ban on cans.

They need those fancy trucks that lift and dump like we have in BCS for both trash and recycle.

What has a wildlife preserve got to do with anything? I'm well aware he's not in a wildlife preserve Cactus. I said if you remove the food source they won't come.
Hince as he said he needs trash cans.

In Midland, TX, it is a $10,000 dollar fine a bird if killed. Doesn't matter what the damage is to your property, they are protected.

Get one of these to put out permanently. Get some vinyl letters and put "Trash Bags Inside" or something on it. Put your trash in there each week. Weight it down with cheap gravel or pavers from home depot.

Lol, I read your 1st post and thought, wow there's another city with the trash bag rule, no way...

At the risk of jinxing myself, I have somehow escaped wrath of the LJ vultures over the years, but have seen them on our street enjoying other people's trash...
