Ted Turner passed. I've spent time on the Flying D in Montana and Vermejo New Mexico. Incredible ranches/properties. Has anyone ever stayed on any of his other ranches?? Say what you will about his business/politics/relationships but the man knew real estate and did well stewarding these beautiful pieces of the American West.

I haven't visited his ranches. Wife and I stayed at Sierra Grande years ago in Truth or Consequences. Ted visited and like it so he bought it a few years later. I've always wanted to visit some of his land. Man owned over 1.9 million acres.

Turner may have had a ranch up there but there's also the 100,000 acre Valle Vidal unit of the Carson National Forest. I've fished Costilla Creek up there many, many years ago.

I heard he could sail a little bit, too.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

I could go on about Turner's politics, not the place. But I will note that he did what a lot of us would love to do:

Get rich, buy a huge western ranch, do what I want with it

Side note, decades ago, we ate with a group who wanted to go to a Ted Turner Steak House. I held my nose and kept my mouth shut (figuratively)

Most tender steak I have ever had in my life, before or since

I rode horses through Valle Vidal a long time ago. Best trail ride of my life. We came over a hill through some trees and into a green valley with probably a hundred elk. They all ran, but a calf got separated from the herd. It ran towards our horses. The calf followed us and kept trying to get up under my gelding. Turns out to nurse, but bit his pecker. He went nuts. Saw the mom pacing at the tree line. We ended up running the opposite direction of the elk and the cow ran up to the calf as we left. Once in a lifetime experience with my dad.

I hunted Mt.Lion next to his Vermejo place a couple of years ago. Was told that his sons hunt, but the daughter was big time anti-hunting.

I hunted Vermejo over several years for elk and mule deer. Also did a lot of fly fishing up there. Some of the most beautiful land I've seen. Lots of history on that ranch and I always enjoyed riding around with the guides and hearing about the history and their hunting stories. His son Beau Turner was coming in to hunt the week after us and that was all the buzz amongst the staff as we were departing. Their rates have gone up tremendously over the last 5-10 years so we quit going. Overall vibe of the ranch has also changed from hunting conservation to more outdoor recreation and preservation.

I can see part of the flying D from our windows. Been across Spanish Creek road several times. This was on his place and pretty common.

Interesting read IMO. He had a lot of it but he did put his money where his mouth was.
I don't think you know me.

Ted ended up in the Top 10…. They call it Real Estate for a reason as the wealthiest people in the world know how and where to store and preserve their wealth….. Melone, Turner, Gates, Bezos, et all.

Hey Ike, can you hook a brother up on a good hunt if you have the room?

Sounds more like a Flying D story.

Never ridden in Montana. That's a long way to tow a horse trailer. Always wanted to ride the Bob Marshall. Maybe one day.
