How long do you want to ignore this user?
Recently I pulled a rifle out of the safe I had forgotten about. The rifle is a Remington model 788 in.243. I took the old Tasco 4x scope off and put a Vortex Diamondback on it.The rifle is amazingly accurate.I want to use it as my "ranch gun" but the noise is really bad for an old man wearing hearing aids, I have taken the rifle to two different places to have the barrel treaded and been told they couldn"t do it. Apparently thebarrel length is a problem. the barrel is nearly bull diameter so thickness can"t be a problem. Any help from the board in locating a reliable smith would be appreciated,

Tx Shooting Dynamics in Llano just threaded two for me. He's got some interesting builds and rebuilds in there. Chris is his name. Maybe worth a call.

If you have the 18.5" barrel are they concerned that threading it would shorten it enough to be considered a SBR?

Just pin and weld the muzzle device after it's been threaded if its that close to 18"

I am jealous, the 788 is hands down my favorite bolt action I own. If I recall correctly the front site actually screws in, I wonder if they don't like the hole and would have to cut behind it thus making it too short? Just a wild guess.

Threading alone should not shorten a barrel unless it also needs to be recrowned. However even that would only need a few millimeters removed, and the barrel length would have to be less than 16", not 18 for SBR. I think all the factory 788 were longer than 18" anyway.

The 788s should be able to be threaded, even if an adapter is needed for your required thread dimensions. Some smiths may hesitate because they would have to pull the barrel, but I would check with other smiths then. I think Shaw Barrels sells (are used to sell) threaded replacement barrels for the 788. That might be an option for you.

MY 788 HAS A SCREW IN THE BARREL FOR A FRONT SIGHT BUT IT IS VERY CLOSE TO AN INCH FROM THE END. THE ONE GUNSMITH CLOSE TO DEL RIO WOULDN"T DO IT BECAUSE HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE SUPER FINE THREADS WHEN REPLACING THE BARREL I DIDN'T KNOW THE BARREL HAD TO BE REMOVED! WHY CAN"T THE BARREL BE THREADED LIKE WE USED TO THREAD PIPE IN THE OILFIELD. .I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO GET THIS DONE AND USE THIS RIFLE AGAIN, THE BARREL LENGHT IS18.5"

If none of your local smiths will do it call Charlie Robertson and ask if he'll do it, probably have it back in 2 weeks

You shouldnt have to remove the barrel from the action to thread it. Just the stock, scope, etc. down to the barrel and receiver. Barrel is well thin enough to slide through the headstock hole in a lathe so threads can be cut on a low RPM.

I'm not a gunsmith but think most smiths use a lathe these days to thread the end of the barrel. This is because for a suppressor the center line of the suppressor has to be true to the center line of the bore. Otherwise the bullet could hit a baffle or end plate - - which is a no go. I think some times if the barrel is long enough then maybe a smith can fit the barrel into his lathe without removing the receiver, otherwise the barrel has to be removed from the receiver and then of course he has to refit and headspace it. Again I would definitely check into replacing the barrel with a new muzzle threaded one if you can still find one for the 788. A custom barrel likely would shoot better also.

Not sure where you're located but threading that barrel isn't a problem when the right lathe is available. What's the thread pitch of your suppressor?
