Wife and I are planning a vacation and am tentatively picking Puerto Vallarta (Dominican Republic is other option). Either late July or February. Anyone recommend a fishing charter? Or why DR would be better?

Billfish, tuna, or rooster fish are what I'm thinking.

I think billfish in PV is more of a fall thing as they are somewhat migratory.

Have you been to or considered Cabo? Hella nicer than PV and great fishing

I used Master Baiters when I went several years back. They set me up with a boat and had a good trip. Don't recall the boat name though. We got into the jacks. Not what I was hoping for, but still a ton of fun to catch. Also, pacific jacks are not bad eating. Never eaten a gulf jack, but heard enough to stay away. The pacific jack eats different stuff than the gulf jack and it was good enough eating. It's no tuna or wahoo, but the chefs did fine with it.

The only reason we aren't picking Cabo is because we already did Cabo. Great time and my only bill fish. It is an option but hoping PV had some things better.

PV is much more lush and jungle. Cabo is desert. Cabo is great. I love it. The energy in the morning when the fleet is leaving the harbor is palpable.

PV isn't centered around fishing. Lots of other things to do. Take one of the all day excursions where you do a bunch of different activities. There are a bunch of options, pick one that sounds most fun to you. Walk the boardwalk on the beach, can't remember the name of it before my second cup of coffee. Don't just go on one fishing trip and sit at the resort the rest of the trip. Unless that is your thing.
