Bear Spray Recommendation for Self Defense

All,

Sending my 19 yo daughter off to Washington DC for an internship at a policy think tank organization geared towards Veterans Benefits / Issues this summer. She is excited to have a great internship after her freshman year in Political Science / Constitutional Studies. Don't worry, she likes guns, fast cars, and believes we should be able to spend our hard earned dollars on guns and fast cars, no liberal tendencies to worry about.

She is not ready for a handgun, and couldn't legally posses one in DC anyway. So I need a self defense product we can trust to keep her safe if needed in that crime riddled cesspool.

Any recommendations on Bear Spray, preferably one you have actually tested or used? I figure I'll buy 2 cans to start - one for her to test and get comfortable deploying, and then one to actually carry.

Any help / advice is greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I don't think that is what I'm looking for, but honestly I had no idea it existed. With no handgun training, I don't think a non-lethal handgun is the right form factor for her, not to mention any legal aftermath from the anti-gun nut job legal system in DC.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking bear spray would be the way to go?

Open to all suggestions, and thanks for the above.

Find a R.A.D class. (Rape Aggression Defense). Fumbling with bear spray when she should be putting distance and finding survival.

Ultimately awareness and preparedness to react. She is just as likely to incapacitate herself with a spray due to wind or proximity or enclosed space.

Are there bear spray cans that are smaller than about 6" tall? Hard to carry that thing unless it's OC, and in DC there are probably laws against that.

Thanks for this SGrem. It looks like a near by suburban police department host classes so I will call later today to see if they have any that fit in our very tight window of time when she will be home from school before we have to take her to DC.

I know this is an important piece of a total plan, I'm just not confident I'm going to find a class that fits our time crunch.

Thanks

My two adult daughters, my wife and I all carry concealed daily and we all also own one of those for places we can't carry or as another option. In my opinion it is a lot more natural to point and shoot for someone used to hand guns than a spray can.

DC and a lot of cities restrict pepper spray size to 1.25 oz. or less.

This. You'll have to find somewhere to purchase when you get there.

I have counter assault bear spray that I have with me when I go camping in Colorado. Never had to use it. So can't speak to that. It's quite large, to the point I'd be surprised if many women could fit it in their purse with all their normal stuff. Just something to think about. Maybe normal pepper spray would be better. Also some companies sell a traing spray so you can practice without spraying the real stuff in the air. I would imagine it's hard to spray pepper spray and not breathe a little bit in. Which in a self defense situation not a big deal, but accidentally pepper spraying yourself during practice would suck.

I have Kimber Pepper Balsters, but I've never used them and have always been curious about what it'll actually do. (yes I've seen the videos).

Wasp spray is a good alternative if all else fails. Can buy at Home Depot and take it any where.

A problem with bear spray is that it's not safe to leave inside a car during hot weather. When I carry it I always put in the back of the truck.

It is not a good alternative, is not built for incapacitating humans, and should never be seriously considered as a nonlethal defense option.

Congrats to her on the internship. I get being concerned for her safety.

DC is like most big cities. There are some really rough areas but she shouldnt really see much of them on her commute to work and visiting the touristy stuff.

I think the bear spray isnt the move here at all. Its large, bulky, has to be deployed correctly. Wasp spray is a terrible idea. All the cons of beat spray and even less effective. And if she does go anywhere with security checkpoints, both could cause issues/be taken.

Awareness and being willing to listen to her lizard brain are the most important things. Dont glue your phone to your face in the train or while walking. Dont have two earbuds in cranked to 11. If something feels or looks off, dont rationalize or talk yourself out of a gut feeling. If she doesnt like how someone is looking at her or how an area feels, get help, get out of there. Our subconscious ability to evaluate an area for danger kept generations of our ancestors alive to produce us. Too many people rationalize instead of trusting it.

When I am in a nonfree area that does not recognize the natural right of self defense, a bright flashlight that can be used as a striking tool is a great option. Something like a surefire stilleto or any of the usb rechargeable lights from surefire/streamlight would be a great option. Wont have to worry about replacing batteries, small enough to carry in a pocket or purse everyday, wont get taken away by a rent a cop…..and blinding someone before denting their skull with a metal tube is a good way to say "go away" in any language.

No. Just no. You will spend more time in jail than the person assaulting you. And likely end up paying that person a huge amount of money to boot.

If you are home and someone breaks in and that's all you have it's one thing. In the street in DC you are going to jail.

Very good friend of mine just retired as a DC Metro Police officer. & this is what they carry on their person. I got some of it as well for less than lethal type situations. It comes with a little hand held holster and be sure to get the Gel, kind. It sticks to whomever it is directed.

Few things. Get two of them so she can practice with one of them. You do not want the first time she deploys it to be in an emergency. As with any weapon, training matters. The holster comes with a velcro strap, so she can carry it in her hand. She MAY get some of it on herself. That happens, but its better that she rides that particular lighting & knows about it ahead of time, than finding out in an emergency. It will also make her aware of the "safetey" setting on the canister.

Second, and I can NOT over emphasize this. Pepper spray, I don't care what kind it is, affects people differently. It is not like TV. I was the armorer at my last TDCJ unit and I've been around the block with this stuff and tear gas, quite a bit. On most people, it will shut them down immediately. SOME people, it barely works on at all.

Pepper spray "heat" is measured in Scoville Heat Units. Bear spray is 5,000,000shu's. What we carried in TDCJ was 2,000.000. The trash at the checkout in Academy is something like 150,000shu's. Do not buy that stuff.

If a dude has been incarcerated a lot, he may have been sprayed more than once...OR he could be whacked out on drugs & that matters. Drugs and alcohol tend to lessen the effect. Also, our hispanic bretheren tend to react less to it.

In DC the bad guys are usually looking for cash. So tell her not to carry any. Ever. Travel with a friend at all times. The area's where I think she will be working are typically "better" than say, South East DC or Prince George's County, Maryland, but there is no fully and complete "safe" place. Congress staff have been car jacked on Capital Hill and there is security everywhere there.

IF she has to use it, tell her to GTFO right then. Don't wait for the cops. They probably won't show up anyway. DC Metro Police is in a lot of turmoil right now & they don't show up a lot of the time.

For personal self defense, meaning if she has to put her hands on someone, the answer is Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu. Mostly Jiu Jitsu.

Thanks so much to everyone. As usual, Bender, SGrem, and O.G. have provided awesome advice. Will give me and my daughter plenty to talk about on the 3-hour drive home from school tomorrow.

Thanks!

What part of DC is her office in? Does she have an apartment already? If not, I'd plan her apartment around which metro line she wants to take in that has a stop near her office. Not all metro lines are the same.

Good: Any lines coming in from Virginia. If she can live in Virginia I'd do that, and probably Ballston or somewhere around Arlington. Blue, Yellow, and Orange lines are all good for the stretch between VA and DC.

Not good: Green, yellow north of DC, parts of Red line but not all of it.

If she can try to avoid changing trains she'll have a smoother commute and deal with fewer crazies in the metro stations.

Also, everything that Bender said 100%. She shouldn't hesitate to get off the train and catch the next one if a drunk/high/deranged homeless person hops on and starts making a scene.

If she wants to live in DC, the upside is it will be cheaper to uber home late at night if she likes to go out. The grocery stores and restaurants around Ballston/Arlington are great though, and there is plenty to do. It is a safer area and the laws are much harder on criminals on this side of the river.

She'll be fine I'm sure, a good head on her shoulders and some self awareness are really the keys to a place like DC.

She'll be in a college dorm on George Washington University which is in "Foggy Bottoms" near the Kennedy Center, Watergate, the State Dept. I don't know where her work will be but she does, and she knows know which metro lines she'll be on. I'll get that from her tomorrow when I find out more. We are hoping there are enough students going the same places on the same lines that there will be safety in numbers. Being a college sponsored program takes some of the sting out of finding the safe places to live and figuring everything out on our own. Again, thanks for the great info!

She'll be fine there and probably won't have to go far on blue or orange. Both lines are generally full of professionals to/from the Virginia side. She's in the good part of DC. Should be an awesome experience for her!

Google UADP Bear Spray. They make a self-defense size and various options. I carry this when I can't conceal carry and for walks in the neighborhood (dogs, etc.).
Edit to add that if I remember correctly, the self defense version shoots a "stream" rather than a "fog" like the bear deterrent version. Can be ordered online and delivered to your address.

Thats a good place to be working. So not, "DC" itself then, thats a good thing.

I purchased bear spray off of amazon in a 2 pack for a trip to GTNP, but never needed to deploy and did not test it. Maybe I will go down to Little Honduras and do a test run (only joking on the Little Honduras part.)
