finds my newborn fawns every summer and eats them all? Will the deer moms hunt down these scum, or is it just wink-wink tolerated behavior?

I had a high fence ranch in the hill country for 30 years. We had exotics and whitetail. Rarely did coyotes kill much. And what they did kill I would have taken out anyway.
If you truly have every single fawn killed every year you would soon have zero deer.
Predators have a place and must be managed for a healthy range.

I worked for a summer in South Texas with then TAMU WFS prof. Dr. Inglis on a predator project. The data showed that coyotes don't kill near the fawns people think they do.
Having my own place and managing others backed that data up.
There is a balance between predators and prey. Managing that balance is the key.

don't worry, an anvil or tunnel painted on a rock wall will exact your revenge soon enough

I'll bet you'll find that the pigs are gobbling up way more fawns than any traditional Texas predator. Nose always on the ground, covering tons of ground all day, every day.

the mom's will fight them whatever it is as much as they can until it runs away or the cullprit escapes with its kill. If a mom has a fawn stashed and the whole social group is with her they will all go that way to defend.

One thing about living on small acreage and having deer around a lot is you get to see pretty cool interactions that you generally never see sitting in a deer blind. They are way more vocal than many would think.

Truth. Much respect for Dr. Inglis. Dr. Nova Silvy said much this same thing.

Guys at Holden Ranch would disagree with you vehemently!
Maybe not as much about fawns but grown deer moreso.

Well of course they would. They make money selling deer and exotic hunts.

They are having coyotes killing grown deer to the point that it's problematic?

Yes

That's something. Been around lots of deer and exotic ranches….majority in the hill country. Few grown deer get killed by coyotes because it expends way too much much energy. And of those, most were inferior or sick. I've seen many more kills by mountain lions and an occasional bobcat than coyote by far.

Yes sir. One of those kind of teachers that I could listen and learn from all day. My favorite WFS prof. Then Dr. McEcheran in fisheries was a kick too!
He loved sharks, skates and rays.

I'd bet wild/feral dogs kill more than coyotes do, especially anything above a fawn.

Put a trap out and wait a week or so after they die before you check them.

The amount of trapping that they do on the Holden ranch and their properties down there in the Eagle Pass area. They have years of history and data prior to running a full-time trapping operation. They can attest the fact that the number of predators directly impacts the deer population. Coyotes, bobcats mountain lions, etc..

They also feed an incredible amount of feed protein, etc. and maybe they're trying to run much higher density populations of Whitetail deer then most people that also met me why there's so many predators

Bottom line they would be fine with no apex or mesopredators at all so they can make all they can off hunts. It's their ranch and can manage it as they want. I've worked with some landowners like that.

this was my thought. More potential food is going to always yield more predators.

Totally agree with this, coyotes do not take that many deer. Multiple stomach analysis studies have verified this.

OP, I'm curious, what evidence do you have that suggests coyotes are talking all of your fawns, or what makes you think they are? Enlighten us please.

Awesome! I always enjoy your posts as well. I'm in East, Texas and we venture up to Tennessee from time to time. We might extend our next adventure out your way and yes, we would enjoy dinner with you. Likewise, if you are out my way, let me know. Camp fire is always open to you.

Back in the 80's a family friend had a ranch between Seguin and Gonzales. They put a bunch of exotic goats and other animals that are not of the area. Oh man, the yotes just had a field day when they found them. Place was fenced really well, but they dug like crazy. My brother and I were allowed to go and kill as many yotes as we wanted. They had the exploding poison stakes at holes under the fence, snares, you name it. I think I have told the story here before but I was in a tree with two rifles and had a chicken tied to a lower branch bouncing on the ground. Come early evening it got scary for me. But had about a dozen dead. I didn't want to come down until I got picked up and figured truck would scare them away.
Bobcats imo get more fawns, but I like bobcats and don't like killing them.

For the posters questioning the OP, this thread was clearly a General Board derivative style post in response to the coyote trapping thread.
