Palmetto State Armory has an Acog 4x32 Bac Riflescope -.223/5.56 Bdc Red Donut Reticle for sale $799.99 regularly $1199.99. I have wanted one for a long time and this seems like just enough of a discount to get me to pull the trigger. But…I think I would prefer the horseshoe dot reticle or even an illuminated crosshair. First, is that a good value? Second, how much is that donut going to tick me off or be less effective shooting at longer distances?

I have the 4x illuminated crosshair model and like it a lot, the chevron crosshair would be my second choice. Don't think I'd be a fan of the donut reticle either.

$800 is a really good price for an ACOG, but is a couple hundred bucks worth having a reticle you hate to use on an optic that will last you a really long time? I'd lean towards watching and waiting for a sale on a model with a reticle you do like.

Buy the Acog for the durability and reliability. There are many LPVO's that are cheaper and better for shooting versatility.

The great thing about the acog's durability is that you can pick up a used one with the reticle you want for roughly the same price.

This is the path I kind of went down. New(er) AR that I picked up needed glass. It was only my second one ever, and I wanted to be able to reach out with it. Chose the Sig 1x8 with the illuminated horseshoe. So far, it's great. Lots of better options out there, but it was on sale, came with rings, and the store I purchased it from - I had a gift card there. I've not stretched it out past 100yds, but you can switch the illuminated reticle off and it's fine.
