I was thinking about sneaking out tomorrow morning with my son to go try to catch some blue crabs using the drumstick on a string method.

Neither of us have been before and would really appreciate any reports or suggestions. Also, does Galveston or Freeport generally have more available places to do this at?

Not looking for any secret spots or anything. Thanks for any help you guys may be able to give!

Thanks for the suggestion! This is perfect. Looks like just under 3 hours from my house here in Bryan.

Anyone know if the recent rains affect the crab bite?

Can also be productive near any popular cleaning station location.... many public boat ramps have a cleaning station.

Do any posters here live down that way and could comment on water levels? I saw there was a flood watch until Monday. Does all the fresh water affect the crab bite?

I live in Katy and have been going to the Gulf coast for 20 yrs.

I've never heard anything about rain levels affecting the "crab bite". They are opportunity feeders and will "bite" on anything at any time. Only thing I can think of is water clarity. While we've had some rain, it is not anything that's gonna effect crabs. Minus a storm surge TS/Hurricane, I doubt anything effects crabs. The bay that Sgrem and i suggested stays pretty salty even w/ the runoff we've had lately. Being on the leeward island side, levels stay steady.

Go and have fun anyway. I've always used chicken necks and a cheap 4-5' crab net. Never heard of anyone using drumsticks. Throw them in the canal I where I dropped the pin.

Have fun...

I really wish I was more into crabbing than I am because there's a spot right down the ditch from us in crystal beach where we can get 30-40/hr. Instead I keep digging my head in the sand trying to make East Galveston bay into a fishing hotbed.
