Some elk shots can be 300 yds plus. A lot of your whitetail preferred calibers will start to significantly drop and loose impact force at distance. Just something to consider. A 22 will kill a 2000 lb brangus bull. But the packer is standing pretty close.

Most importantly, never pass up an opportunity to justify buying a new gun.

At the end of the day its all about proper shot placement. In the 30 years of doing hunts on our ranch for Elk, whitetails and regular and super exotics..... we had all kinds of people with all ranges and variances of shooting skills and hunting experience. It was my experience, that the majority of the time, the guy that showed up and bragged about how great his rifle was, or how well he could shoot, and thought he was the 2nd coming of Carlos Hathcock....was always the person I had to spend a day trailing wounded animals that he fubar'd a shot on.
I also learned that a lot of times the guy who could sit on our range and drill a perfect group or hit the targets perfectly was oftentimes the guy that could not make a good shot on a live animal to save his soul.

As to all kinds of people, I was on an elk hunt, 10 of us in all. One of the younger guys that I did not know had some kind of black rifle or derivation of one, he was in love with the thing. It had stabilizers, bipod, tripod, quadpod, small a/c unit, and two pencil sharpeners (well it had a lot of crap on the rifle). First morning he had a chance at a decent elk and had issues with the safety and something else, forget what now, and didn't get to take the shot, lol. He did shoot one later in the hunt.

Go ahead and thread the '06 so that you can keep enjoying one of your first rifles. In fact, you will enjoy it more and so will whoever you pass it down to.

6.5 is plenty for elk with the right bullet and placement. The 6.5s gets bad press because they are fast and often paired with a Barnes type bullet that I have seen fail to expand more often than it should. So it just zips through and leaves a small entrance and exit, bleeding very little externally. The critter dies but sometimes isn't found. I prefer a bonded bullet even if the ballistics aren't quite as flat.

A friend of mine has taken everything from deer to elk to bison with a 6 creedmoor with as16" barewl. A 300prc for elk is perfectly fine.
