What does this mean to us non-legal folks?
Apparently, 30-06 is a type of ammunition, so I think it was a reference to the death penalty.

He's not eligible for the death penalty, since it's only available for capital murder in Texas, which requires specific circumstances to be met (multiple murders, murder of a police officer, murder of a child under ten, etc.). The maximum he can get is life (eligible for parole after thirty years), but he still has pending charges for the coworkers who were shot and survived and for shooting Trooper Tovar.
How does a mass shooting not qualify? Simply because he didn't succeed in killing multiple people (because that was clearly his intent)?

Life is good for him. Although I would like to see him with hard labor in Angola. Maybe one day Texas will re-introduce labor. I think crime would drop 90%.
Forced labor as punishment just doesn't work in practice.

Make him pay restitution to the families. Deserves to be in a rock quarry busting rocks.
I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the maximum $10,000 fine (in addition to a life sentence), but the fine would go to the state.
I'm guessing a civil suit wouldn't yield much...

The jury is currently deliberating. The state asked for life and his lawyer asked for forty years.
He got life (eligible for parole in April 2051) and the maximum $10,000 fine. After he was sentenced, his mother told him not to sign anything and that the case will be appealed and that Tim Smith is still alive. He still has six pending charges in Brazos County and two pending charges in Grimes County (his Grimes County trial is scheduled to start on August 11th).

On Friday, she said she had photographic evidence that the court had refused to review. Obviously, she's delusional about him being alive, but I'm curious what the evidence was.
She sounds like someone who will bring enough attention to herself to get committed to the care of the state if she keeps it up.

If he doesn't reach a plea deal and gets life on his Grimes County charges, the judge has discretion to make the life sentence consecutive to his life sentence in Brazos County, which would make him eligible for parole in 2081 when he's 87 if the judge orders consecutive sentencing.
