Im building racks for my plants and was thinking to make them out of 2x4s and using expanded steel instead of plywood to set them on... where do you get large sheets of that stuff?

where to get 4x8 sheets of expanded steel grids? BCS area..

Mack bolt and steel is where I would start locally. They are on highway 21 by the airport in Bryan. It's been a little while since I have been in there but they stock a lot of stuff.
I have purchased a lot of metal stock from them over the years including 4x8 solid sheets.
Brazos Industries isn't a supplier but they should know who may carry it locally.

I would look at using two layers of 2"x2" heavy hog wire fencing, Probably just as good and a lot less expensive,
You need to get it soon as prices are going way up for all steel products that are not already in stock.
Commercial growing table grid sheets may be a better option.

Consider using a galvanized horse panel. Like a cattle panel but smaller grid spacing.
Producers Coop usually has them.
Expanded metal can be galvanized with spray can galvanizing spray but will get expensive.

Walk softly and carry a big stick! Make sure the big stick makes big boom noises and flashy bright lights.
Mack Bolt changed hands, moved locations, and no longer carries steel or alloys. Just fasteners, etc.
That stinks. I didn't use them very much but when i needed them they seemed to have what I was looking for and would even cut it right there.

Mack Bolt has [color=#111111]moved from that location. They are on the bypass around 21 I think.[/color]
I think these cattle panels would work pretty well if you don't need a really tight weave like the expanded metal.

Agreed. They were the only place in town that had aluminum and other alloys readily available without crazy prices...
