Received an upright freezer from someone for free that I knew wasn't working. It's been kicking my butt that I can't figure out why it isn't and don't know if I should see about someone coming out or just put it on the curb.

I feel like at this point it has to be a freon/compressor issue which is something I can't fix.

Has anyone hired someone to look at stuff like this? I'd hate to just throw more money into it if it would cost me what a new one would be.

Most people will say Buddy's. My experience hasn't been great, but I'll defer to the board here who geverally seem satisfied and happy with them so I'd start there.

Does it cool any at all ?

Is the fan running ?

I thought that was only for refrigerators ?

The last time I called Buddy's, I was told that if you didn't purchase it from them, they do not do repairs. I've used AJ with Aggieland Appliance Repair- he's great and easy to schedule as mentioned above.

A lot of people also like MARCS (Manny's Appliance), but they do charge an upfront service fee to diagnose that can be applied to the repair.

Yep, MARCS will charge you $100 just to come out and look at it and say, "you'd be better off buying a new one than repairing, Thanks!"

Buddy's did some work on my fridge which was definitely not purchased from them. BUT that was some time ago so their policy may have changed.

If it laid on its side for a while, or was in any other position than upright, it could be ruined forever.

That is disappointing as we used them for years.

Not cooling at all. Fan is running fine. Defrost heater gets the coils hot but nothing is getting cold.

I don't know how it was transported before me but I transferred it upright and not on its side.

Can you hear the compressor running ?

Should be a black cylinder looking part,

Have fixed a few in my life but only one this week. If compressor is not running you can check the run and start windings with an ohm meter. One i repaired this week the ptc that controls the start winding was exploded by gvec this week and $8 worth of amazon parts and it alive again. Email in my profile if i can help.
