Dear St Joseph's in Bryan,

Patient John Doe had surgery at your facility in the spring. At check in, we were asked to make an estimated payment for our portion of the surgery cost. We paid $1,000 into what is apparently a black hole.

Over the next few weeks, St Joseph sent multiple claims to BCBSTX for the pre-op and surgical costs. The sum of the claims added to $960. For those that passed basic math in elementary school, we are due a small refund. ($1,000 - $960 = $40)

The only thing we have received over the past few months are offers for us to utilize a payment plan. Every time we received an email we would call the number for assistance at the bottom of the email. Guess what would happen? Absolutely nothing! We would explain that our payment was more than the claims. They would say that the claims were changing and we needed to wait.

In 4 more weeks, another "Balance Past Due" email. Another offer for us to setup a payment plan for our refund. Another phone call. Rinse and repeat. Wait 4 weeks again? Another kind offer for a payment plan.
I can assure you that their "customer service" actually does not provide any service at all. It has been more than 16 weeks since the surgery and tonight yet another email, yet another another payment plan offer.

This incompetence is pervasive throughout their management and operation of their facilities; this explains why Scott & White is thriving and CHI St Joseph appears to be going out of business.
  • Broken medical equipment--just roll it into an empty room and close the door.
  • Broken elevators--no problem just take the stairs.
  • Nurses--resigning in droves.
This was our last visit to this once thriving and now pathetic hospital. It is a sad situation for the medical and ancillary staff that do care and provide excellent service.

Sincerely,
Disgruntled

By law, they have to refund your overpayment in I think it's 30 days. You might want to check, but you can use that to hit back at them.

They outsourced their revenue cycle to Conifer around a decade ago. They have a small equity stake in the company. It's a disaster and has been with no end in sight.

My husband had a similar issue with them last year/earlier this year for a much larger amount! He made multiple phone calls over a couple months and finally ended up getting his insurance company involved who made phone calls to the billing people and finally scared them straight. If this is possible for you, maybe your insurance company can help out!

From a physician side of it all … insurance companies move the goalposts on us all the time and put practices (and I'm sure hospitals) in a bad place. They also tell patients one thing, and the practice or hospital another. They are truly diabolical at times - and yes, United Healthcare is the worst.

Many years ago st joes sent a like a $2.73 balance to collections from the birth of one of my children. Never received any notices before it was turned over and would not have known except I had a credit monitoring service that triggered from it. The funny thing was I had wrote a check for the exact amount and they cashed/deposited it but never credited the account so it got sent to collections. Turned into a major pita to get it removed from all three credit bureaus which require letters and proof that the collection is not valid. Luckily I had the check that was sent back to the bank after they deposited it. Have not been back to that hospital since and never will as long as I can avoid it.

The only way I got my issue resolved was to go to the office and speak to someone in person. It was handled within an hour. Hopefully, you can do the same.

When hospitals decided to outsource their revenue management the overpaid admin sold it to their bosses as a great strategy to reduce employee expense and achieve economies of scale. They haven't pivoted back to working the accounts better and improving customer service yet. Hopefuly they will - but since insurance companies just keep squeezing that won't happen as soon as it would otherwise.

St joes pretty much exudes incompetence..

I had surgery back in march and got so pissed at the nurses that I walked out of the hospital room even though I just started recovery..

I got tired of being lied to by every nurse on the floor... the misdiagnoses of the emergency room doctors... many many other issues... I would have filed a lawsuit but they have more money than I do.. and they dont care..

The rank and file staff doing that job are seriously underpaid. The volume of work is huge and never-ending.

It's not surprising to me that there would be issues. I'm amazed they can get anyone to do that job.

There's a lot of things I would do if pissed off, but walking out of a hospital following surgery and before being released ain't one of them.

As KidDoc said, if your story's accurate, you may have a very good case and a good lawyer would be a real good starting place.

UPDATE

I spoke to 6 different customer service representatives yesterday. #6 may have been the winner. Basically they applied our full payment to the surgery date bill and show a refund. Then they show no payments on the other 2 bills (prior day pre-op tests) thus they are "overdue".

They do NOT look at the sum of the bills compared to the payments nor do they seem to care. I asked if they could move some of the surplus from one bill to the overdue bills and they said yes but I have to "specifically request" them to do that. WHY THE HELL DO YOU NEED TO REQUEST THAT? My phone calls asking for help should have been enough!

So their intent was to refund the "overpayment" on the one bill and continue to bill me on the other "overdue" bills.

I went to the College Station St Joeseph ER after a car wreck in May, and I have been trying to get a bill to give to the auto insurance of the guy who ran into me. I have called 5x to their 800 # asking for this since it happened... Each call lasting about 45 minutes.... These people are not in the USA, however.

They keep sending me the same statement, but it is NOT a bill. It even says on the statement that "this is not a bill."

I have spent hours on this matter. 45 more min this past Mon, and 30 minutes earlier this morning. I was told a supervisor would call me on Tuesday but it never happened (of course).

Also on Monday, I also talked to people in the local hospital, trying to avoid dealing with the people outside of the USA... But, they can't help me. Thatw as MORE time. I MUST speak with the company (outside of the USA). No one at the hospital can help me.

I also found out that they added this amount to an existing payment plan I already had, without asking me. I owed money from past emergency room visits...

So now, they had to cancel the payment plan to get that amount out. And, the computer is not allowing them to put my original payment plan back together...

So, I have accomplished zero in over 2 months, and I have to wait for someone to call me AGAIN to recreate the payment plan. I was told that if it goes to collections, they will fix it later.

I was ready to mail off my check for this month of the payment plan, and I was told not to send it now. They have made matters worse.

I have had that happen many, many times over the years with St Joesph.

I will get a refund for something I don't even know what it is from, and then a bill for something else.

I waited and waited for my bill to be corrected since they charged me for two different levels of care for the same visit. Insurance helped escalate things when I called to ask about the EOB and the original charges. A few weeks go by and I called the hospital to check on the corrected bill, told it was still processing. A few more weeks go by and I received a letter from collections. They never sent me the corrected bill - just sent it straight to collections.

I was told on the phone that my cancelled payment plan MIGHT go to collections, but "not to worry about it" since it doesn't effect your credit report... Someone was supposed to call me this week - by today, if I remember right. They never called me last time. I know I will have to waste another 30-45 minutes on the phone, by the end of the week, to work this out. No one from their billing dept will be calling me, despite the promise.

I finally got this worked out today. I spent 49 minutes on the phone. They redid my original payment plan. But, it's like $1.30 per month more. Not a huge deal, but just irritating as this is entirely their creation... They couldn't put it back on the same due date either. This matters, as my wife only gets paid 1x a month, and I liked the previous due date more.

I wasn't going to call and spend another hour on this later in the month to get my way on that. Plus, I was risking it going to collections if I waited more time to do this in a couple of weeks (based on what I was told last week).

It took forever to get transferred back to someone here in the USA. The original person wasted 20 minutes of my time, and I had to explain this more than once - despite asking to speak with a supervisor right away and explaining why.

Then, I waited 20 min on hold to speak with the "supervisor" (someone actually here in the USA).

I have probably spent over 5 hours on the phone with St Joesph on all this by now, since May.
