Does anyone still sit outside Home Depot/Lowes looking for weekend work? My grandfather used to occasionally pick up guys from a spot on HWY 21 (in town) for his ranch work, but he hasn't seen people there lately.

Does anyone have any experience with using this?

(Or if anybody wants to make $15/hr helping me lay down a paver patio, let me know.)

I think you may be shocked what wages those guys are getting that hung out at 21. I heard a story from a concrete guy who needed some extra labor and he said when he went by during either 2020 or 2021 not one single person would work for less than $25 an hour cash and they wanted lunch provided as well. I imagine with all the ICE risk going on they are not hanging out as much anymore. Maybe talk to a football coach at one of the high schools and see if that have any leads for labor.

Anyone know if they're insured somehow? Like if they lift a dresser and hurt their back?

Excellent question since I'm thinking about using them myself for something. I'll try to find out.

Yep, make sure whoever you use has insurance or a bond, I had a friend who hired a neighbors son and the son tripped carrying a big box and hurt his neck/back helping to load a trailer that off my friend's property, The neighbor sued him and it was a big mess and costly, His insurance would not cover him as it was off his property.

Yup. Very risky these days. Hire a pro or just don't bother. Sad to say.

OP, I saw 5-7 guys at 21 and wjb by the store waiting for work this morning around 7:45. If you end up going this route let us know what rate they are getting for day labor these days

I have been picking up day laborers for close to twenty years in the St Teresa area. I have been using two brothers for the last two years from 8 to 12 on Sat. They get $20 per hour each and lunch at DQ.
