Hey y'all!

My son is 10 and currently in 4th grade. Basketball is his main sport and it's all he has ever wanted to play. This weekend he mentioned that he wants to try baseball.

I haven't played baseball since probably his age so I don't know it like I do basketball

Can anyone recommend a league that isn't very intense for 10/11 year olds? With him never playing before I don't want to put him into an intense league.

Thanks!

We live north central just south of the domain. So nothing far south.

You can try Town & Country League but you may have already missed signups

I'll add

If you know of a baseball camp over the summer that would be cool too

My boys have always enjoyed the baseball camp that Texas State puts on. You need to register like now though because it fills up fast.

Concordia has some good camps that would be close since their campus is off North FM 620

Northwest Little League is off of Mopac a little south of Anderson / North of 2222.

Balcones Little League is near Parmer & Mopac.

Both of these are likely well into their spring season at this point of the year.

RBI Baseball is a little more focused on the underprivileged player but I'd recommend checking into it because they have a summer league. And for a starting player it may be a better choice. Hard to start at 10-11 at a NW or Balcones...most kids there will have played since they were 5.

RBI might work well actually. It wouldn't interfere with his basketball!

Yeah I don't know where they play but a few years ago my oldest, who played from the time he could walk, played one year of high school then hung up his glove. I was talking to a guy who coached my younger son at NW and he mentioned that RBI is pretty chill and that if my older one wanted to join purely for fun they'd take him.

Point being that RBI is likely more rec than NW. NW is technically rec ball but it's a pretty competitive little league. Lots of kids also play select, etc.

Most rec leagues sign up in Jan-Feb. you can start now just throwing a ball in the backyard. I did this with my son starting about 3. Proper technique is a must so watch some YouTube with him. And get one of those red plastic bat and ball and practice same in the yard.

If he has some athletic skill he can pick it up pretty quick.

This is your best bet plus the addition of Town and Country based on your geography. We're at Balcones and yes, we are 4 games into the spring season. There is a fall which is pretty much labor day to thanksgiving.

Our kid started at 4, like most in these parts. The game of baseball really clicked when he started playing Mario Super Smash Bros. He learned to read before preschool by playing Pokmon. If you have a video game fanatic that's the fastest way to learn the game. Under 10, it seemed like they all had to relearn how to throw the ball between seasons, even fall and spring. By age ten, baseball was a year round activity. Then growth spurts hit, vision changes, and if you're lucky, later priorities change. So much fun and so many great memories.

Three edits attempting to fix spelling failed. Pok-e-mon. I struck out.

Hey L7, it's not super close but I'm surprised no one has mentioned CPYL(Cedar Park Youth League). After 10U, most of the serious teams/players get out of 'rec' and go to tourney/travel ball. So 12U has space for all talent levels. There are still some talented teams though. They just sent out emails for Fall registration so now's the time if he's still interested. Check the website.
Did you get him into RBI? We played last Summer in the hs division.
