We are tossing around the idea of looking for a lake house. Zero chance I can afford something on Lake Travis - but also realized I'm pretty ignorant on what good lakes are in our area. Ideally, we would like something that is 2 ish hours away and is good for recreation and has decent fishing for me to wet a line from time to time. Lake Whitney is the only one around here that I have any knowledge of - so hoping for some other good suggestions. We are in Round Rock.

Any suggestions?

Also - prefer there to not be waterfront bulkheads since it tends to often make the water rough. i.e. Lake Bob Sandlin.

Also - don't have to be on the waters edge, but would also like somewhere that I can beach the boat or tie it up somewhere for a couple of nights and not have to pull it out of the water every day.

We've stayed on LBJ several times and I've enjoyed it. Not sure if it would be any cheaper than Travis though. Plus the levels are constant so you wouldn't get the wild swings like you do on Travis.

Lake LBJ & Lake Buchanan will be the most reasonable. Have a buddy selling his house on the water in Kingsland. He's highly motivated to sell. Address is 120 Highland Ln, Kingsland, TX

I'd do LBJ up on the Colorado arm of the river. Travis and Buchanan fluctuate water levels way too much. Not sure what your budget is and what your space needs are but if you look hard enough you can find something on LBJ for around a million.

Lbj up the Colorado arm is not what he's looking for

Granger is pretty muddy. Ok fishing, limited accessibility.

Travis is going to be expensive and fluctuate a lot. Good fishing and recreation.

Inks is a nice little lake but also limited access due to size.

Buchanan is good fishing, interesting with the granite shorelines. It does fluctuate water levels also but not nearly as much as Travis.

You can try a place along the Colorado River, marble falls or LBJ, constant level but access will be difficult.

I've been hitting lake Austin more lately. The wakeboarders are annoying as hell but the water level is constant and it's protected from wind, and the fishing is better than one might think. You can go upstream until you get into water temps you prefer. I've seen it as low as 60F near the Mansfield dam to almost 90 on the lower end in August. Lots of places for sale but I bet the prices are jaw dropping.

Some of the lakes should have their levels rise quite a bit after the last 24 hours.

Buy a slip at Lake Travis Marina. They have upgraded the place. We kept a Cobalt 220 there for nine years. Made a good profit on selling the slip (233%) and the Cobalt held its value (72%) well.
