My 5 year old is showing interest in baseball and I want to encourage him but I want to grow his interest. Does anyone know of a good league around Carrollton? As he is a true beginner, Would you recommend TBall or coach pitch?

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Baseball Association is one of the better youth baseball organizations in North Texas. Great league.

Looks like they're registration is open now.

I think it's spring only for baseball / teeball, but Prestonwood Sports Organization is really good for intro and rec level play. All games at the PCA campus at Park and Midway.

Pay attention to the organization's definition of league age. He's 5 but he might be considered league age 6. Typically the league age is determined as of May 1 of the upcoming year as the league year runs Aug 1 to July 31.

Unless he turned 5 between May 2 and today, 6MCP is likely his league age. It's a transitional format from T-ball to CP. Batters get 3 pitches from the coach. If they don't put the ball in play they hit off the T.

I coached for 25 years and ran leagues and tournaments. Buckle up for full-time 7 and 8 CP. They were our #1 and 1A problem leagues with coaches and parents.

Great age and great memories when managed correctly.

This. I coach and am on the board here in Southlake DYB but CFBBA is a great league. Like the poser above said, if he turns 6 before May 1st he'll be slotted for 6u which is hybrid coach pitch and t-ball. Lots of new comers at this age.

Note. If you are working on BP with him DO NOT lob the ball in. Throw it on a line. He'll catch up to it eventually. It's a developmentmental processing thing. Trust me.

Thanks for chiming in. I played ball until middle school but shifted to football at that time. Any advice on teaching how to hit? We've been playing catch for a while now and he isn't great but has a cannon of an arm for a 5 year old.

Once I knew what I was doing I was hired by a hitting facility and charged for lessons specializing in the 5u-8u player. Keep it simple. Grip and stance consistency is key as comfort builds confidence.

And make it fun. Always fun.

There are a ton of hitting videos on YouTube or Facebook/IG reels.

Biggest thing at his age is try and be athletic. Have him hit a tire or bag without thinking. This is his athletic swing. Throw a stance in there and let him have fun. Lots of paralysis by analyses with young kids. Dads and coaches trying to get the perfect swing/fundamentals and they are so slow just trying to think through the process.

It's good to get a good foundation and teach fundamentals but when it's hitting time, let him swing athletically. Have fun!
