I have traveled both internationally and domestically to the cities that most would say are the best food cities in the world.

Paris, Lyon, Naples, London, Milan, Rome, Vienna, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Yokohama, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Madrid, Barcelona, NYC, New Orleans, Chicago, LA, and SF.

They all pale in comparison to Houston food.

I will say we don't have good Pizza.

That is it.

Houston is the best and most underrated food city in the world.

Im with you here. Although I can get a better specific food in other cities, overall I cannot get the diversity of all types of food in other cities like I can in Houston. I look at it this way, i can get a decent pizza here, but i cant get decent mexican in nyc or chicago. Not even close. Its ****ing garbage there. I can get decent creole food here but in new orleans most everything outside of cajun/creole is ****, except maybe 1-2 options. Our asian foods are top notch, just as good as san fran, la, or nyc.

Like every massive city, you can find pretty much any food you'd want in Houston. But… there's way too many fast food places in this city to ever claim it's the best food city in America or the world.

What exactly do you think all the food cart and street vendors serve worldwide?

Not McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut.

But you know people from NY probably would make this exact same argument about pizza in Houston and Mexican food in NY right?

In fact I know somebody who lived in San Fran in her 30's and lives in Houston now who says the Asian foods in Houston are hot garbage.

I'm being really negative about Houston food. It's recognized as one of the best food cities in America and it deserves that. It does have quite a bit going for it. But I also think the diversity it offers relative to other big cities is highly overrated.

Here are some spots outside of Papa John's, Domino's, and Pizza Hut that might change your mind.

Vinny's
Pizzeria Solario
Goldtooth Tony's
Tiny Champions
Coltivare
Gypsy Poet
Luigi's in Midtown is amazing as well.

Large Meats, remove canadian bacon, but add meatballs. Go to Axlerad and get a (or 3) beers. Enjoy.

Sorry lived in Singapore for 5 years….and I miss the food scene there. I could literally walk out of our condo and have 500-1000 food choices in walking distance, some expensive…some super cheap. Just ONE street by our condo had kopitiam, Indonesian, Korean, French, Chinese, bad ass coffee/espresso shop, and small hawker with about 10 stalls covering Indian, Chinese duck/meat, plus a western stall. There is nothing in Houston that comes remotely close to that experience.
Singapore is disqualified due to lack of edible Mexican food. It's been a while since I was there but I tried every Mexican restaurant on the side of the island I was staying, none I returned to despite craving Mexican food for the 3 months I was there. Some highlights were at more than one restaurant the queso was just the cheese sauce from a can, moldy tortillas and broken glass in my burrito.

Saying people from some of the largest, most diverse cities in the world would have to cherry pick a specific food niche to compete with Houston's food scene isn't quite the own you think it is.

New Orleans, Charleston / Asheville, and Houston are the best foods scenes in in the US. They just didn't have the media base to tout them or chambers of tourism and commerce willing to buy the stars as LA, NYC, and Chicago.

This is where I'm confused. Houston and NOLA at least get PLENTY of media credit and hype for their food scenes.

Oh I know it isn't. The point I was making is that the post I was replying to is just feeding their own preferences and comfort foods rather than indication that one is better than another.

Go to Back Door Pizza in Hockley. My friends from New York say it's the closest to New York Pizza in Houston. They drive across town to go.

Every city in the world has tons of fast food, not sure why that is a disqualifier for Houston.
Because some people will use any excuse to bag on Houston for any reason. It's just their nature I think.

Threads like these are always predictable - one or two folks really like the Houston food scene, the usual suspects come in and tell us all how bad it really is and we just don't know and they go on a not-so-humble brag about some obscure food they ate in some exotic location and how it makes that place so much better than our local fare.

There's a big difference between "really liking" it and claiming it's the best food city in the world. The lack of top tier restaurants eliminates it from that claim immediately in my opinion.

I just got back from 2 weeks in China visiting, Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guilin, Wuhan, and Hong Kong. It was awesome eating Chinese food every days in all those different regions, but the food wasn't better than China Town...just cheaper and more available.

But then again, I eat normal food, and don't tell myself I'm getting a better meal just because I paid more. I've had amazing borscht for $1.25 in a hole in the wall in BFE Ukraine. I leave the cultivated experiences to people who were bred for them.
