My son, 10 years old, wants to start karate. I'm sure Tae Kwon Do or something similar would be fine, he just calls it karate. We are in Cinco, far west side essentially where Cinco Ranch Blvd hits 1463.

Does anyone have a recommendation for where to look/join? Ideally I'd like him to take an intro class or two before committing if they offer something like that.

I've heard good things about a dojo run by Rex Kwon Do.

Coworkers daughter around that age goes to Reign BJJ and their competition team sounds legit.

My kid went to Master Lees taekwondo. Spent 3+ years there and got his black belt. They've got a couple of locations. We went to the one @ cinco ranch and spring green.

My boy is on the comp team at Reign and they are, indeed, legit. Jiu Jitsu is a fun sport for the kids because they get to train at full speed, since there is no risk of a kick to the head. Also will most likely be the best for practical application for a kid. But if you want the karate kid punching/kicking experience, Tae Kwon Do is probably a better fit.

I'm sure you know my coworker's daughter then. I've seen her videos and it's levels above my daughter, who's been training at a very traditional (think UFC 1, 2, 4 champion) BJJ gym for a few years. My daughter isn't that interested in super competitive stuff, but it's crazy what she can do as a 10 year old if she gets my neck.

It takes 30 months mininum to go from white to yellow at our gym and she was pissed when her cousin got a yellow at a Tae Kwon Do in one months (and $100+ extra in test/promotion fees).

I have a kid in Tigers at same location now. Has been for 4 years or so and is a black belt. No complaints from us.

If you don't mind me asking, what does Master Lee's cost? I have no idea how much classes or membership for these things run, so just trying to get an idea of what this will run me. Thanks.
