How long do you want to ignore this user?
I graduated in 2024 and lived at home for about a year in Dallas. I just accepted a job offer in Houston but not too sure on good places to live/rent in your early to mid 20s. Any suggestions?

Houston is big. You'll have to be more specific on the area.

Do you prefer to live close to work? Or do you prefer to live where you want to live, even if it means a long commute? (I'm the latter, which is why I ask.)

You'll need to provide work location and schedule.

There's another thread on here with someone asking the same question but would have to find it. Take a look five pages at least.

I'd look out toward El Paso

It's not so humid out that way.

Sorry, I'm going to be working near George Bush airport.

I'm just like you, I would rather live where I want and sacrifice the shorter commute.

Budget?
What do you do on the weekend?
Aversion to ferris wheels?

I think I would like to stay under $1600. I enjoy going to sporting events and going out with friends. Pretty basic.

Then you'll need to make friends.

So I suggest roommates.

I'd say stay within the red. Above the blue and you won't have to deal with the highlighted areas that have very bad traffic on your commute to Bush.

As mentioned by Trident below, the pink area is probably the sweet spot between
-commute to Bush
-proximity to single/night life
-Astros/Rockets/Texans
-outdoors stuff like Memorial Park, Buffalo Bayou trails, and Hermann Park
-Museum District to impress the ladies

I lived in near Memorial Park back in the day and it was great location for single life. Also, you would be going against traffic for the most part. Something like this would be good:

Try Katy. Only takes 25mins to get to IAH area.

In all honesty, don't live anywhere near where you work then unless you like to get your **** stolen at least once a month.

Nice map. I'd suggest the heights with roommates.

I appreciate it. I'll take a look at them. At face value looks great.

I would also suggest to do more than just go to sporting events. Sports, volunteer somewhere etc. maybe you already know people though that live in Houston from aTm.

I don't think bars are the way to go to meet people in Houston.

Kind of depends on what bars in what neighborhoods. I have friends I still hang out with just from hanging out in the same places for years and years. Wild crazy party bars/clubs, maybe not so much. But laid back places where most people live in or grew up in the area, it's a little easier to at least make some casual friends to do things with.

I spent my 20s in the heights. It was great. Good food and bars. Find something within walking distance of the bar scene at 20th and TC Jester. Plenty of townhouses and apartment complexes in the area.

If you enjoy trees and nature, try greenspoint. If you want to live by the water, try North Shore. If you like bigger lots, try Acres Homes. Personally, I like a vacation kinda vibe, so look at Sunnyside.

We have a rental townhouse in Rice Military and have had a lot Aggie grads rent from us. Start there and enjoy being central- Memorial Park is great too.

I was in this exact area today and every female I saw walking around was ass ugly and that was very uncharacteristic from my time living there.

Yep, check into the Heights - lots of apartments off Shepherd/Durham close to the night life on 19th/20th street. This will be a better commute than being south of I-10. Also Washington Ave has gone sketch.

Great points.

Check out Facebook marketplace for places where someone may be looking for a roommate. Search the address and see if it's in that area.

You can probably look up their profile at the same time as a vetting process.

Also, assuming you get some kind of relocation at work or a month of hotel, ask people at work what they suggest or know anyone looking for a roommate. Great way to start talking to new colleagues as well.

I worked near Bush/Greenspoint when I was in my 20s. I lived in Lazybrook and the commute was generally 30 min each way. There is traffic on 610 where it meets 45 but compared to the rest of Houston its not too bad. I'd definitely follow the map advice as there is nowhere on the north side that a 20 something college educated person would enjoy unless they are already married up and wanting suburban life.

Some of this advice is good general 'Houston' information. No offense though, but it sounds like it is written by 40-somethings in Sugar Land who have a little bit of whimsy for their younger days and don't counterflow commute themselves. Yes Memorial Park is nice but also traffic in town is pretty **** everywhere during peak drive times. Circling all the way down into the museum district for a IAH commute daily… uhhh. No.

If I were OP and I wanted to live in town and had to go to Bush everyday, I'd stick to the corridor north of 10, south of 610 and west of 45. Bonus points if you can find something in that Shepherd/Durham and Yale corridor. To me, that's your best trade off of daily commute and living in the city.

I just wouldn't veer to areas where you have to hit more than 2 different freeways to get to your destination and/or have a ton of off highway commute time to go with the daily distance… you'll probably burn out on that fairly quickly. You start getting to a point where city living isn't worth it because commuting sucks significant amounts of your free time up.

Maybe I am just old and lame now, but I'd probably be all over renting in Spring Branch if I was coming out of school now. It's close enough in town, but I'm assuming it's a lot cheaper. So much cool stuff that wasn't there when I was growing up too.

I am sure there are still maybe some deals to be had in and around Oak Forest as well? That's a great area/location as well.

Spring Branch...relatively affordable, cool bars, amazing food options, not obnoxious crime or traffic. Hop on Beltway 8 and you'll be going mostly against traffic at least in the mornings. You probably don't want to live anywhere north of Spring Branch area if in your 20's and looking to meet girls/friends.

The dirty branch has a nice area, that a new grad can't afford. The dirty branch has a **** area, that a new grad doesn't want.

Rents should be reasonable at anything located on Imperial Valley.

I gave him that recommendation with only N Dirty Branch in mind. A lot of which is pretty middle of the road, rental wise.

There are some nice lofts and apartments around there for a recent grad. A few are directly off I-10/Kirkwood. I have to assume they are significantly cheaper than their equivalents in the Heights/Midtown/Washington/Eado areas.

Some solid 3/2 rental homes in the $2.2 - 2.5k range, if one is able to find roommates.

$2.2k

$2.4k

$2.6k
