Let's see how this one plays out

Driverless and mostly empty: Why Waymo cars keep piling up in this Houston neighborhood

Quote:

Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward are reporting unusually high volumes of Waymo driverless cars moving through their neighborhood, just days after the company's official local rollout. The autonomous vehicles have been spotted traveling in large groups and getting backed up at railroad crossings, sometimes for over an hour.

Even the Waymo-bots know to herd up in the Nickel.

This is a hard hitting news story. Amazing.

Smith acknowledged that transportation options are badly needed in the Fifth Ward, and said Waymo's response was welcome. Despite his concerns, he's holding onto hope that his early excitement about the technology returns.

Why aren't there any Uber or Taxi services here in the fifth ward? That's racist!

[Waymo shows up]

Why are all these mother****ing cars clogging up the roads?

I was trying to figure out what the story was. Cars had to stop for a train?

Could homeless people just get in the back seat to sleep while they drive around the city? Might be a solution to the homeless problem.

Kind of hard to carjack and rob a driverless vehicle.

First time on the Tine Board?

Be sure to mention any chance encounters you have with local news/weather/sports/radio women or any of their friends.

Fun fact: Waymo has a monitoring center that watches you in the car. A friend of mine was trying to get a little sum'n sum'n going with his girlfriend in the backseat and a Waymo employee came on the speaker and told them to knock it off.

What if the Waymo drives them to El Paso and drops them off?

I figure drowning is more humane than being tortured by the cartels but I'm a humanitarian.

Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa have had Waymo for years. Recently one drove onto the light rail track and the passenger had to jump out. I've seen one darting in and out of traffic once and another circling one of the parking lots at Scottsdale Fashion Center. No way I'd get in one.

From your story.....

Quote:

"I actually felt a little sorry for the car. It obviously made a bad decision and got itself in a difficult place," said Andrew Maynard, an emerging and transformative technology professor at ASU.

Given the tone on this thread, y'all will likely think I am crazy, but life is short!

Does anyone have a Waymo invite code for Houston? That's the only way to get access to the service at this point since it is early in the rollout.

I've used Waymo multiple times on trips to San Francisco and I will say they drive very aggressive. It's really awkward when your car is cutting off another car driven by a human and they're looking at you with a pissed off look and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. LOL. Will be interesting to see how that plays out in Houston.

Back in October we had 7 inches of rain over 3 days in Scottsdale and Waymos kept driving into high water in the washes and arroyos. Apparently the programmer never thought about that. FD had to perform several high water rescues. Having lived in Houston 28 years I'd imagine there will be some of that.
