It is best to just buy at HEB right now or are the markets in Galveston catching any at this time of year? If so, where are some good places in Galveston to go? Katies?

Yes, Katie's is the best to go to in Galveston. Rose's in Seabrook. They are ~45 minutes apart.

I called Katie's before I saw the responses. It was like $16/lb for 16-20ct head off. That seems just crazy. Going to call Rose's and TH tomorrow. Thanks for the replies.

Hillmans is almost totally commercial now. Not sure if they still sell to the public at the counter anymore. Last I heard is no more public sales, but I have not verified.

Why?

They campaigned hard to essentially eliminate recreational snapper fishing, while hauling in 1000s of fish through their long-lining partners, if I recall correctly. Basically stating that rec fishermen were destroyiing the snapper population with their 2 16-inch fish per day (with no captain or mate fish allowed) while their long-line boats were bringing in tons of undersized fish.

A lot of restaurants were on board and illegally buying her fish also, which caused me to stop ordering snapper for 15 or so years. Seems like the Ruggle's group was main culprit? It has been a while.

Buddy funded some highly questionable 'research' on the snapper population, then used his poor 'science' as evidence. The poor science and some money to the right lawmakers screwed over recreational fishermen. Those are his fish and we have no right to them. F that guy.

And the real kicker is that he has a small fleet of center-console offshore boats that are registered for commercial fishing with commercial captains and they will take recreational fishermen to load up on red snapper and the like. They get around the regs (with loopholes he and his people wrote) by classifying these as "commercial trips" and the clientele then purchase whatever amount of snapper they can/want at the wholesale prices.

I'm not 100% on all the details but I know people who have done these trips with Guindon's people and loaded up on snapper when the season is closed to recreational fishermen.

They were also against the upcoming location of the Battleship Texas because it would block their "award winning views"'.

First, I missed the Amazing View Awards. Was it on TV or live streamed?

Second, what view are they worried about getting blocked? Jack up rigs and barges being worked on at Gulf Copper?

I do recall Ruggles Black buying fish from recreational fishermen from Freeport who had amounts way way over the limit and got busted by game wardens. They were loaded down.

At least one of them was an operator at one of the Dow plants in Freeport. He was fishing on his days off between shifts and selling to Bruce Malzan of Ruggles.

I think the amounts he was caught with made it a felony.

He threw away a good job with benefits to make extra money poaching.

Screw them both.

Do like we do. Head out to the Gulf with a two cases of Natural Lite and two empty 120QT ice chests.

Shrimper owners don't allow beer on board so sidle up to one at anchor and hand them the Natty and the empty coolers. You'll get two full ice chests of the freshest shrimp you'll ever have.

Buy yourself a 100k boat, a couple cases of beer and burn a couple hundred bucks in fuel and get 100 pounds of shrimp.

The good news is that Freeport, in all of it's wisdom, has pretty much run the entire fishing and shrimping industry that once called it home off so there really aren't any places now to sell your catch!
