I remember when this happened and was living in that part of town at the time. Awful.

A major development has been announced in one of Houston's most infamous cold cases, with a man now charged nearly 36 years after two young victims were killed.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office confirmed that Floyd William Parrott, 64, has been charged with capital murder in connection to the 1990 killings of Cheryl Henry, 22, and Andy Atkinson, 21.

Wow! She was a cheerleader at my high school. That arrest has been a long time coming. Hopefully they got the right guy. I figured they were closing in on the perp when they tied his DNA with another case in the City.

Per the article: "The Harris County District Attorney's Office, Houston Police Department and FBI Houston are planning a joint press conference to provide additional information."

I wonder how they caught him?

An old co-worker of mine was very close with a good number of HPD officers back when this happened. The crime scene was about 2 miles from where I was living at the time, and one day, probably a little more than a year after it happened, we were just casually talking about it and he reached in to his backpack and drops this stack of paper about 3 inches think on his desk. He then said "Here's the crime scene report and all the interviews they've done on that case up to this point. You can read it, but don't tell anyone at all that you've seen this. It would jam me up with my buddy and definitely jam him up with the department, so this is our secret."

I took it home that night and dove in and it was, no question, the most engrossing thing I've ever read. There were names, addresses, workplaces and phone numbers of all the key players...friends, family, exes, etc. I wouldn't make a very good cop because while I was reading, there were a number of interviews that you just come away from thinking "It's gotta be this person. This is the person that killed them" and you just keep waiting for an arrest and it never happened. I read the majority of the 500+ pages that first night and finished it the next. And then, everyone I encountered out on that end of town was a suspect as far as I was concerned.

I pray they've got this right. Their poor families need closure.

Golden Gate Killer says hold my beer. If you committed a crime back in the day, and the responding forensic team did a good job processing the scene and collected and preserved DNA evidence, sooner or later they are going to catch you. how that technology has grown over time is amazing. Nothing will bring them back but as stated at least the families have closure.

Here's an article explaining how they caught him. He was involved in a she said / he said rape case in 1996, in which they got his DNA sample. They matched it with the DNA from this murder and the other rape case of a stripper that had a DNA match.

I've been in close proximity to the crime scene a lot. In 1992 I was working for the City and there was a construction project right next to the crime scene that I visited from time to time. And of course I heard all about the case and the bodies being discovered right there, and like I said earlier I knew of the case because Henry went to my high school. Year later my wife moved offices to a new building where the parking garage was practically built on the crime scene. So everytime I would pick her up or drop her off at the office I always thought of this case.

From the KHOU article..

Quote:

Authorities said Cheryl's purse and shoes were found inside the car. Family members and friends rushed to the scene shortly after, some arriving before police.

How is that possible?
