NRG is changing the stadium name back to Reliant. That was a surprise on the news yesterday!

Did they save the old signs, or do we all get to chip in a little bit for new ones?

I think that all the NRG signage was going to have to come down for the World Cup games, so maybe this has something to do with that?

There's six years left on the naming deal so it seems weird to change it now. I worked for NRG when they changed it the first time, and it cost about $25 million to change it in 2014. There were thousands of things across the whole complex that had to be changed from the large signing to small things like employee lanyards. It was weird changing it back then because the company didn't use the NRG name for the marketing of many products and that's kind of the point of a stadium naming deal.

There wasn't much need back then and there still isn't now to raise the public profile of the NRG name. However with such a short time left on the naming deal I don't know where they see the value of spending the resources to change it back to Reliant (unless they plan on re-upping the deal).

Why does it have to come down?

Why does it have to come down?

B/c energy company branding is insensitive to all the 3rd world visitors who don't have electricity.

No stadiums can keep their corporate names/branding during the World Cup unless it happens to correspond with an existing FIFA sponsor. It was part of the World Cup contract.

Yeah, all of the NFL stadiums with corporate names like Mercedes Benz in ATL, AT&T IN Dallas etc will all just be Atlanta Stadium, Dallas stadium (which must particularly irk Arlington tax payers.)

I read something that said the Benz stadium roof has the logo as part of it so they lucked in to being the only corporate logo that will be shown across all of the world cup.

Oh no, hopefully the signs coming down for FIFA don't dent the stadium's branding revenue. That will really set them back on the $100 billion in deferred maintenance that some posters on this board say is absolutely necessary.

Mercedes is such a dogshxt brand. If it gets to keep its brand placement on a stadium for the World Cup, I guess the execs can high five each other. Literally no one cares about sponsors or naming rights.

Exactly, and who cares if it says NRG on the stadium, that company does not exist or complete with any other countries energy providers

Its not that FIFA is worried about NRG competing with other countries energy companies. Its that they want a monopoly on all corporate ad logo on their event. If NRG paid FIFA directly, I'm sure they could keep their name and logo on the stadium. FIFA charges a pretty penny to have your logo on the sideline board and on the ads associated with the world cup. They don't wany any other sponsorships slipping in because they made a deal with a county or other pro team. The Olympics do the same and the NCAA almost goes as far. I remember when March Madness would come to Houston all of the permanent ads except the stadium name were covered with a black tarp since they weren't NCAA sponsors.
