In the long run rail would be the cheapest option over self driving buses etc. Per google

Rail freight typically costs $0.03$0.05 per ton-mile, making it 34 times more affordable than trucking, which generally costs $0.15$0.20 per ton-mile. Rail is more cost-effective for long-haul, heavy freight, whereas trucks provide better speed and direct, door-to-door service

But we have to pony up the upfront expense of the new rail. And the TSA would screw up any convenience the train MIGHT offer. Plus it would be Spirit Airlines dangerous.

Rail freight is not really comparable to passenger rail. There's not a single passenger rail line in the US that makes a profit once subsidies are taken out. Most operate at a huge loss and passenger rail construction costs are staggering.

How does passenger rail compare to freeway travel?

For the cost of subsidized passenger rail, the government could buyout the assets of Spirit Airlines and provide free flights between Houston and Dallas for life. HSR is such a boondoggle.

No idea. But it's irrelevant because the conditions under which we built the freeways are no longer in play. Between political posturing, environmental reviews and restrictions, NIMBYism, land use challenges, and so many other roadblocks, we can't effectively do large-scale transportation projects in this country any more. Any discussion of passenger rail that requires new track construction will ultimately fail because it can't be done at a price and in a timeline that's remotely feasible. We might as well be discussing zeppelin routes.

The Katy Beer Gardens people own the Cardiff Rice Dryer next door and have been trying to repurpose the space for a few years now. I saw they were going to City of Katy council meetings to try and get the codes changed or designating it as some kind of special historic structure to allow them to bypass newer building codes. I don't know the specifics on what codes were the hold up but I doubt City of Houston would do the same nor would anyone want to sink a bunch of money on really old aging concrete towers in an area that isn't a popular hangout.

See the Astrodome. Plenty of stupid people who love holding on to some useless relics.

Hear me out:

Trump legalizes pot

Dems in Harris County turn the Dome into the largest indoor pot farm in the world in order to secure the "urban" vote and create a little cash flow.

I don't think the dome would crack the top 10 list in US of indoor pot farms.

What the dome is actually eventually going to turn into...book it. Destroy the MF'er while we still can.

There is still the option of turning it into Thunderdome and loading it up with criminals.

Ooh. Indoor rodent hunting packages.

Any of the above suggestions would bring in more money than it gets sitting there empty.

I hope politicians don't read this thread and see that idea.

A federalized Spirit Airlines would be hell in the sky where people die.

Lost of memories at Northwest mall. I remember my grandmother taking me there for school clothes when I was visiting and riding on the carousel as a little kid.

Saddest moment, was when Roznovsky's hamburgers closed their doors a while back. Those that know the TC Jester Garden Oaks area.

Yep, RIP. When Mytiburger closes, you will know that the highfalutin NIMBY white and Jewish transplants have finally won. Simo's seemed to be on life support last time we went, but hoping it was an off day. I miss what that area used to be.

Mytiburger has been on life support for a while. Michael Berry did a show from there to drum up support and bring business in. When Don Teo's closed I cried. Loved that placed and their chile con queso was chef's kiss. Whole area had a small town feel to it back in the 80s and 90s. Only thing original is Shipley's. Still open late serving fresh hot donuts.
Can't decide if I want to be cute & cuddly, or go blow some sh*t up.
Decisions decisions.

I always wanted to go to Malibu Grand Prix.

I went one time with my parents, closed about a year later or so.

These places close because they suck.

Don Teos and Roznovsky's were both hot garbage

That Shipley's is still around because they slang dope out that place. Only reason why there would a line into Ella at any given time 24 hrs a day.

However, I still can't explain Eastern.

Speaking of Shipley's, Ella Auto Care appeared to be closed last time we drove by. That dude would pass anything...i think I learned about them on here.

Someone hyped this place up to us around the time we moved into the hood back in early 2013. It was horrendous. Not long after, we discovered a pretty solid take-out place next to Plonk and never really tried anything else for Chinese. Can't remember the name of it, although I think it's a Ramen place now.

Eastern is still around because the owner use to be a drug lord for the Chinese syndicate. Or at least that was the rumor I heard back in the 90's from the purple hair ladies in the area. Who really knows. Never ate there, never see anyone there, yet they are still in business.

Saw on a neighborhood group that a corner store chain applied for a alcohol permit in that Eastern location.

It's still open, but seems not for long.

China Wok was the place by Plonk, it's been that ramen place for a pretty long time.

Shipleys moved their drive thru line into the parking lot for Ella Auto Care, but they have to be dealing drugs or something, or there is a lot of people that want some donuts at 4:30PM or whatever time you drive by because it is always slammed up.

That's right, China Wok was pretty solid until they changed management, from what I remember. Loved the jolly old Asian man who would bring your food.

Yeah that Shipley's is weird, would be pretty crazy if a place like that was slangin dope...although all bets are off in the tine.

All I know is that I used to love driving and biking past just for the amazing smell.

If they don't hold on to the dome, how can they keep paying Ed Emmitt's friends to do a new study of possible reuse ideas every few years? The dome is a money printing machine for the people studying what to do with it (besides the full demo that the public voted for)

you guys are overthinking it. This isn't some grand conspiracy to pay consultants.

they don't have any money to tear the Dome down, so it's going to stay until someone figures out how to pay to do something else. I don't think it's super high on the priority list of **** the County can't pay for.

Coco's in the old Don Teo's is pretty good, but don't think they have queso
