Big bend is 4 hrs but that would be my recommendation. If you have a hard 2-3 limit, I'd say alpine. Check out the Big Bend Brewing Co.

I haven't been by recently, but highway 17 from balmorhea to ft. davis is a very neat route. Lots of stuff to do around there as well, between the historical fort and the observatory.

We ended up driving to Carlsbad NM and then to the Guadalupe mountains lol. Just a "small day trip" from brownwood
