I do not know what the criteria are for the Weekend Iron Ass Award of Land Cruiser Activity is, but I would like to submit myself for this week's consideration. I followed through on an idea I had earlier this spring; I drove from the RGV to my nephew's wedding in Johnson City in the 40. I carefully picked a route almost entirely of 2 lane roads, took a day off work, suckered a friend to ride with me (one way), and set off in a cloud of dust.

Yes, I'm being dramatic, but I'm looking at you 60/80 guys when I say that you can't appreciate enough the improvement in comfort, control, and sophistication as the Land Cruiser developed. 100/200 guys y'all go out and have your kids beat you with a rake in the yard for while, then you'll be ready to enter the chat. It was 360 miles each way, up through the brush country: Hebbronville, Freer, Tilden, Poteet. Then skirting San Antonio on a bit of 1604/Research Parkway before getting more FM roads to Boerne transitioning to hill country along Sisterdale Road to our penultimate stop, Luckenbach (to say we did).

I am pleased, for a vehicle I completely dismantled then put back together, it has once again earned my trust. We'd done trails together, but these were the longest single day drives. Over the almost 800 mi (with bumming around Fburg) I got 13.2 mpg on the way up (calm winds) and 11-12ish today against a healthy south wind. All the fluids stayed in their respective reservoirs and did not mingle, the 2F provided the go, and the brakes the whoa when I needed them. I have aspirations of a great (read: long) adventure/journey someday, and one of the purposes of this trip was to establish how much ground I can expect to cover in a normal driving day. Once my nerves calm from the over stimulation I will make some notes to myself.

All that way and I took exactly one picture of my trusty steed:

The groom's cake my nephew chose would be right at home in a 4 Plus cooler rack!

This is the kind of legendary stories we need. What you left out were the number of shout-outs and thumbs-up you undoubtably got along the way.

I'm having some patches made up. I'll get you one. You define the Land Cruiser owner.

3 summers ago, I did the following in my 80 series':

Day 1: Midland, TX-New Braunfels, TX- Roswell, NM
Day 2: Roswell, NM - SLC, UT
Day 3: SLC, UT - Boise, ID - SLC, UT
Day 4: SLC, UT - Roswell, NM
Day 5: Roswell, NM - Midland, TX
Day 6: Midland, TX - New Braunfels, TX
Day 7: New Braunfels, TX - Midland, TX

At the time, I lived in Midland, dropped kids off at camp in New Braunfels, drove to Boise to swap 80 series Land Cruisers, back to New Braunfels to pickup kids, then back home. The worst part was not having cruise control until I swapped 80s in Boise. I'm sure it was still much better than driving a 40 series.

How's the road noise in an 80 on road trips like that? After 4 years of taking my dual sport to Big Bend and telling my family about all the cool places further out in the park, I'm thinking about buying an older Cruiser/LX or GX to load them up in and explore more. I'm deaf enough that road noise won't bother me, but 10 hrs of highway driving might be too much for the family if the FJ80/LX450 is noisy.

What'd you say? I couldn't hear your post after driving my FJ80 to the grocery store this morning.

In an OEM, 1FZ-powered 80, the road noise is going to be noticeably higher than a modern car on the highway. Especially going into a headwind or up a grade as it typically can't hold overdrive at 70 mph in less than favorable conditions.

I also have a 2017 LC200 and the road noise in that isn't bad at all. For some reason, my back does not agree with the LC200 seats, so I don't enjoy driving it more than about 3 hours. It's the only vehicle that has ever bothered my back, so I'm going to blame the seats instead of my body.

I added sound deafening to my cabin when I had new carpet. I daily my 97 FZJ80. I spend have the time on the phone using hands free. No issues. No louder than an F150 and less noisy than a diesel F250

You are correct. If the worst part of that insanely long legged journey you listed (very impressive) was not having a cruise control for the first half of it; it is in concrete fact - much better than driving it in a 40 series.

BTW, I think you should be retroactively awarded the Weekend Iron Ass Award of Land Cruiser Activity for that week 3 summers ago.

I know mud if full of posts from guys who daily 40s or drive them on long trips, so like I said at the outset, I'm making light of it - but even at that the road noise and wind was no joke. I'm tickled how the conversation above is about road noise in an 80 - I can attest that going into a 15mph wind, driver driver side window down and kick vent open (passenger window 1/2 way down), I had a freaking full blown TURTLEBOX (non Ranger) in the passenger seat and had trouble figuring out what song I was singing along to at times. I'm a big "I want to hear every mechanical squeak" type driver, but if I was doing it tomorrow, I'd carry some earplugs for the into the wind legs.

At one point I passed a guy who was moving a hay bale with a JD 4020 along a fence and the dirt/hay was blowing back in his face as he was headed to the corral. I wanted to fist bump him and say 'my primitive machine brother'. I could relate.

My passenger for the drive up (which as the most pleasant leg by far) spent most of his Army career flying AH-6 Little Birds in the 160th SOAR. For reference:

When we left, I told him that our drive was going to be much like riding there in a little bird: rough, hot, loud, cramped, analog, and relatively slow... but promised nobody should be shooting at us. After the first fuel stop I apologized that while we burned off the first 1/8 of a tank there is a pretty strong gasoline smell, to which he replied "exactly like a little bird". After our arrival he admitted I had been correct in my estimation of what the trip would be like. I'm glad he wasn't with me on the way home.

ok. You can't post a Killer Egg and FJ40 in the same sentence. The rest of us have to live with our own man cards.

The OME springs are so much better than the factory ride - I am pleased with that. I worked on all the steering before Colorado, but since then it doesn't seem like's it is as tight. I put all new tie rod ends, rebuild the center arm and drag link, and took the slack out of the box; but didn't rebuild or replace the steering box. Honestly, it's only really squirrelly when trying to drive faster than I should anyway. I much prefer to be off the beaten path, but sometimes you've got someone on your ass and inevitably I find myself pressing farther down on the accelerator.

Have you done anything to your steering?

I need new tie rod ends badly. It doesn't feel too loose but I can see the rubbers are split/flat. When i went at it with a grease gun the zerks were half working. Some took grease others spit it back out. I think my OME is past its prime. The bushings are all getting flat. Maybe later this year I'll get on the project. Doing it in the carport sucks plus I'm not fully recovered from a hip surgery in December. I need to paint the wheels also. The factory primer is wearing off.

Got a rock to the windshield on a road trip over the weekend, what are the AB's thoughts on replacement? Dealer or is Safelite sufficient? I'd prefer dealer but AllState doesn't seem to be OK w/ paying the dealer price minus deductible like they did last year for my Tesla.

The general consensus from mud is to go with OEM glass but apparently its really difficult to find for the 200 series (not sure what model you drive).

200 series correct? whoever you go with make sure they understand there's their side and top trim that's considered non-reusable )retainer clips too) on that vehicle so make sure they include that as part of the windshield replacement. If they don't, it probably means they do not understand what needs to be done for a proper windshield replacement on a 200 series. I have concerns about the installer that was the case.

Any 200 series owners looking for a gun safe?

This was in my Land Cruiser when I bought it but it doesn't fit my families needs.

I would really love to trade it for a set of OEM heritage wheels if possible.

Yes, it's a 200 series LX570. I called Toyota first as I'm sure it's cheaper and very close to my office, but they sent me over to Lexus.

Thanks, for this info.

Research the windshield replacement on ih8mud. Plenty of bad windshield replacement stories on 200s. There's an Austin shop that's recommended on mud and they're ~$1,300 for OEM glass without calibration.

That price is inline w/ the Lexus dealership near me for OEM (probably farms it out but there's a warranty) so I'm going go w/ them if AllState covers it. I'm in Houston and can't drive to Austin for a fix.

Reach out to Dealer Auto Glass. They're near Don McGill and do all the glass work there and at Westside. You can go to them direct and I would just get aftermarket glass. I believe Pilkington makes the Toyota glass so try that. I used Trival glass and it seems to chip easier than my original Toyota glass. May want to go ahead and replace the cowl as well.

Also check TEQ Auto Solutions for a quote on valley plate leak fix.

I'm sure this raffle is legitimate.

However.

Many of the influencer raffles you see on social media have a questionable process:
Entry is either direct ticket purchase or "free" ticket with purchase of merchandise.
Many, many tickets sold.
Vehicle or prize is raffled, winner is unknown or generic social media handle.
Winner is affiliated with the raffle host.
Winner sells prize with majority of proceeds benefiting host.
Host has made money on the sale of the initial merchandise or ticket sales plus sale of prize.

For those in the San Antonio area, I drove past a somewhat sketchy used car dealer off FM 78 with a 40th anniversary FJ80. Saw it last year and the owner said it's not for sale but now it's back again.
