I need to make sure it's not stolen. I mostly trust the guy but also do to want to get in the middle of inadvertently getting rid of someone else's car.

and therein lies the rub. Without some work you don't really know if it was stolen somewhere along the way. The odds are that some 'buy here, pay here' car lot/finance company still has the title.

You've got a license plate number and obviously the VIN.

Seems like you should be able to do some snooping on the Texas DMV web site with that information.

Would at least tell you if the registration is current.

I've run the plates and it doesn't come back as showing stolen, the registration expired in 2023. I'm gonna ask my scrap metal guy about it.

As someone that has dealt with facebook, trying to sell stuff like equipment, it's easier and more reliable to put it on a trailer and send it to scrap. I would rather get scrap price than fight facebook for 2000 dollars. LOL.

Does it run?
Can you deliver?
Can you paint it first?
Is this a full size car?
Do you have cats?
Can I buy one headlight?

You can call the local tax office and give them the vin. They won't give you the owners name but they will tell you if it's able to be registered (not stolen) or not.

You don't even have to leave your house for this.


Then list it as-is bill of sale only. And take the plates off of it. If it's a manual transmission the 24 hours of Lemons guys are using these mustangs quite a bit lately.


Price it at 600 and come down to 400 and it'll be gone today. 400 is about what you'd get at a recycler.

This is of interest to me. My daughters' car has been stuck in probate for almost 8 years and we can't sell it. It's rotting away in a friend's pasture. Was thinking of having them declare it abandoned and ignoring any attempts to serve notice via certified mail.

The steps as I understand them are:
  • Report abandoned vehicle to law enforcement.
  • Law enforcement will attempt to contact owner via certified mail within 10 days.
  • Rightful owner has 20 days to reclaim vehicle.
  • File form 46-4402, Abandoned Vehicle Report
  • Title per form 130-U

My one experience with Facebook marketplace was positive so I'm going off of that. We just sold our boat on it. I used a local teenager who has grown up around boats and guides on his own. He posted on FB and got 12 offers on day one. Sold it to the second guy in line after first guy ghosted us.

Thanks for sharing. I wasn't living in Texas during that time so I was not familiar with the case.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Obviously words aren't enough. I'm very impressed with the lengths you went to for your daughter. 3D modeling, buying the car, etc. Wow!

One relatable thing from the story is the importance among that age group of the Snapchat Streak mentioned by her best friend.

My A&M Class of 2017 daughter had a good friend who stopped being her friend and my daughter was distraught because the ex-friend broke their Snapchat Streak (dropped their Fire) after something like 18-24 months of back and forth every day.

Six degrees of separation and all, my first girlfriend at A&M graduated from Creek.

I recall your daughter's case -- again, sorry by the way. I've had way too many friends who've suffered the same, albeit non-violent loss. I certainly don't know what you're going through but they do and I've seen it first hand. So you're not alone (and I think you already knew that -- just wanted to make sure).

Anyway, what's the short version of why it is still locked up in probate? Is there anything preventing you from taking possession of it even though you don't own it?

The reason it's stuck in probate is that my wife's ex hired a top probate litigator with a $50k retainer for an estate worth ~$30k (as far as we know). There just isn't much incentive to try to recover funeral costs. He makes north of $10m per year and would bury us in legal fees the estate can't cover.

Find a tow company that will assign it abandoned... in lieu of payment. Something along those lines. Shady? Yes. But if you can find a tow person to do it... game on. Worked for a friend.

I am about to go through this with some property I am buying. There are some scrap metal dealers that can take cars without titles. They just have to have the right license. I am not sure yet how it works but I have talked with a guy who said he could take them. He even mentioned that I might actually make a little money off of them. I am supposed to get back in touch with him once I own the property. Call the nearest scrap metal dealer and see if he can take them. If they are not licensed to do it, they can probably tell you who in your area is licensed to do so.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

On a related note, did you know you can order a dump truck load of dirt and have it delivered to your house… or any house? They just dump it on your driveway or lawn or wherever you tell them and drive away. You don't even have to be home. It's very convenient.
