New Wheels or No?

Sometime in the next couple of months, I'll be offloading my current truck to givemethevin.com because I'm getting a new one.

I was trying to milk the current tires until then, but after driving in the rain at highway speeds, or below for safety, this past week, I'm no longer comfortable with the tread life remaining and plan to buy new tires.

With that said, the old, stock wheels have the clear coat peeling off and look pretty rough, so I was thinking of buying some aftermarket wheels at the same time in hopes of getting some more money out of it.

My gut tells me that I'll never recover the wheel cost, but wanted this boards opinion.

New wheels or no?

What truck? Should be able to find a set of take offs on Craigslist or Facebook for less than a set of new tires.

There are only two reasons for changing the wheels on a truck that is going to be sold imminently:

1. You need tires and someone on Facebook is selling their wheel/tire setup for less than you can get quality tires new (truck accessory shops do this all the time after they install lift kits and custom wheels/tires). Shop eBay. They're everywhere.

2. You plan on selling the vehicle on the other side of the tracks.

I have an old high school friend who owns a used car lot that caters to a certain clientele. He's told me more than a handful of times that if you slap chrome wheels on a crapped out Charger or Ram on a salvaged title, it will fly off the lot.

If you're selling the truck just find some used tires with tread left on them and be done with it. Don't spend a lot of money on something you're about to get rid of. Aftermarket wheels often times can lower the value of a vehicle

Depending on your truck type, you might be able to find a decent deal on a complete set of takeoff wheels and tires on marketplace for not much more than replacement tires would cost

Appreciate the responses. Think I'll just stick with tires only. It's a safety issue for me, so I don't want to skimp, but I won't go to the level I would if I were keeping it.

Just get a set of used tires from a reputable used tire shop (i.e. not the llanteria on the corner with the painted yellow tire out front). I like Utires.com and have bought several tires from them without issue.

There are companies that will refurbish your existing wheels and make the look like factory original condition. That includes correcting road rash and refinishing to original spec.
