Anyone go from truck to SUV and regret it?

Do you have acreage, a farm or ranch? Then you very well could. Are you on 1/6 of an acre in a sea of suburbia? Nah, you'll rarely need the attributes of a truck more than an SUV of similar size.

this a terrible idea. for families, minivans are superior to suvs nearly 90% of the time.

Our SUV knocks the socks off our minivan in every category except fuel mileage. We switched to tracking smiles per gallon and it's gone great for us.

forgot to add maintenance, tires, brakes, insurance, taxes, etc. all cost more than an Mini-Van when talking larger SUV's that can actually haul as many people and as much stuff as a minivan.

I have an SUV and a truck. They both get worked pretty hard. I can't hook up a Gooseneck to my SUV, but I've filled the cargo area of it with syrup tubs and cubes a time or two. The feed store always looks at me funny when I put a syrup tub in the back. All that to say it's nice to have both.

My father in law took a calf to market in a Mazda Miata.

I'm not aware of a minivan than can haul as much stuff as my SUV but maybe there is one out there.

As for the maintenance, I had to replace the timing belt on our Honda Odyssey at 100K. That was freaking annoying. I'll take a few extra bucks per oil change to not have to do that again.

But you can no longer transport plywood sheets with the doors closed.

I'll cross that bridge when my 3 trucks and 2 trailers are all out of commission at the same time that I need plywood.

Edit. Forgot about the livestock trailer. Could easily fit plywood in there. So 3 trailers

Since your wife is keeping the minivan you should get another truck. A Tahoe is basically a minivan as they absolutely suck offroad and all they are good for is carrying people. At least a truck offers some things the minivan can't already do.

I used to have a full-size truck but now we drive a mid-size SUV. I miss having a truck for when you need it but rarely do I actually need a bed so the SUV is more practical for daily use. I did have a full-size SUV for a rental recently which I enjoyed so maybe that's what we'll replace the beater with when it's time.

I've come to the conclusion over the last ten years that full size trucks are highly overrated.

Honda Odyssey
  • Maximum Cargo: Around 155.8 cubic feet with both rear rows folded down.
  • Behind Third Row: Approximately 38.6 cubic feet behind the third row.
  • Key Feature: Offers a highly flexible and versatile interior for maximizing cargo space.
Chevrolet Suburban

  • Maximum Cargo: Approximately 144.7 cubic feet with all rear seats folded down.
  • Behind Third Row: Around 41.5 cubic feet behind the third-row seats.
  • Key Feature: A full-size SUV known for powerful engine options and strong towing capabilities.
The Suburban can haul heavier loads and tow, but not hold more stuff. Unless you regularly tow stuff, then the mini-van wins.

My wife and I hauled around 4 boys for 18 years in our Odyssey and were almost never short of space. Once I borrowed a cousin's overhead storage box and it hit my MPG so much, and the wind was brutal so I never did it again.

The van will cost you far less over 10 years of ownership. Just the list price is $10k cheaper. Start adding options to the suburban and it gets $20-$30k more. With small kids, it's 10x easier to get in and out of with the sliding doors and it fits in more garages.

When I was young, pickup trucks were for work vehicles and farms and were basic, cheap, durable, and got work done. If people, including farmers, wanted a nice car, they got.....a nice car.

40 years later fewer people than ever work on farms, more percentage of people than ever live in cities. Trucks now are bigger than ever, have luxury features, and are some of the most expensive vehicles on the road. People have the wildest, in my opinion, justifications for the 6-8 feet of open trough on the back of their 20 foot long, 6,000 pound daily driver.

There are people who definitely benefit from a pickup bed and a level of towing beyond the highest rated SUV, but it's not that many and I still question beating on a $60k+ vehicle with leather and sunroof and crew cab for family and automated side steps.

How did everyone drive cars back in the day? Do we just have more stuff, more consumer stuff, than ever and just like carrying around with us everywhere?

Thanks for the assist. Is that a new thing? I was able to post pics a few weeks ago. For some reason Imgur won't give me the .jpg or .png link anymore which I think is causing the issue.

I'll go hit up the nerdey and see what's up.

I swapped my Tundra for an LX570 in 2022 and got a Model Y Performance a bit of on a whim a year later thinking my wife would drive it. Now she drives the LX570.

I miss the Tundra a couple times a year when I need to do landscaping projects etc, but I can haul bikes on the hitch and both hold 5 or more folks w/ enough cargo room.

this a terrible idea. for families, minivans are superior to suvs nearly 90% of the time.

More like 99% of the time for the majority of families. The only thing an SUV has over a minivan is towing capacity and better offroad capability. But how often do the majority of families utilizes those two specific features over what the Minivan can offer?

I tried to convince my buddy of this but he instead just got a Chevy Suburban just for the fact that it has more towing capacity that he will "need" whenever he needs to tow whatever large/heavy thing for his small side projects. Well it's been 5 years now and guess what, he has never towed anything while suffering the consequences of paying more for gas with the higher MPG, having his small wife and other family members consistently struggle trying to load things in the back with the much higher floor, and has had to pay out two insurance claims because his kids have slammed the doors against other cars. But hey, at least he's not lame and is able to keep his cool social prestige within our neighborhood.

We bought an Odyssey 7 years ago when we thought we might have a third kid. Third kid never happened so we don't really need a van but my wife loves the hell out of that thing and will probably drive it to 200,000 miles. Has 86,000 trouble free, debt free miles on it now. Glad my wife doesn't feel the need to "keep up with the Joneses".

The minivan fanboy cult who demands you acknowledge the greatness of minivans around here is a bit weird.

I absolutely have nothing against minivans and really wanted to make one work when I had twin boys a few years ago to go along with my, at the time 6 year old boy. But when I went to check them all out the leg room just wasn't there with car seats in the second row, which is why we went with an expedition.

Granted I'm 6'8" and my wife is pushing 6', but I'd say that minivans aren't really practical for folks 6'5"+ with car seats unless they want to be driving with their legs in the dash.

Your being sensible and buying a very used Excursion.

Most people don't have that much sense when it comes to car buying.

LOL, it's not a fanboy cult. It's just lots of folks use common sense to make decisions on vehicles.

But I can't really talk, I have a sports car in the garage that only holds two, costs way more per mile than any truck or SUV but it's also never going away the garage unless I'm dead.

Fixing to go AT4 to my wife's 9 year old 4runner and get her a gx550. I just can't make myself get rid of her 4runner. It's been rock solid and my at4 has already had multiple issues
