I have a 2023 F-250 King Ranch Diesel with 19k miles. The piece of junk Wranglers that came with the truck are already out of tread and worthless. Discount Tire is quoting me around $1800 for four Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 (20 inch wheels). Does that sound right? Seems high but I don't have a lot of experience with tires. What do yall think?

Yikes. Here is my invoice from 3 years ago. Not sure if these are the same but the size is the same.

Tariffs?

And we just paid about $1500 for a set of BFG KO3's in the last several months for my wife's 4Runner at Costco. I'll have to check that price might have been more like $1300.

Tire rack is showing $1784 which include and $80 rebate. I would try to wait for a larger sale if you can (Labor Day, Black Friday). If you can't wait, $1800 is in the ball park of current pricing. Try NTB as well.

I spent $1400 for the light duty defenders on my 4Runner about 4 months ago at discount.

That's a $90k truck?

I don't show a LTX MS2 in that size.

Is it the LTX AT what they're quoting?

So freaking weird. So I go in there and the guy sells me whatever the M ones are for $1532. Then after about an hour later, he calls me and says "I'm so sorry sir, I ran you up and charged you for the 18's, but your rims are 20's so the difference is another $345 after I take 10% off for my error."

So I go and get it, pay the bill xtra $345, and come home and now see that I do, in fact, have the AT's and not the M ones. Are these lower grade or cheaper than the M's?

I'm confused. You make it sound like he overcharged you and was going to credit you the difference.
Juan Lee Pettimore

No, I had to go back and pay more.

LTX MS2 are not available on that size.

The LtX platinum, and Agilis and AT2 are the non snow applications.

The AT is their "all terrain " but it's not aggressive. It's a good tire. Albeit an aged design. Still a top notch tire for the class though.

Should I have gotten the BF Goodrich's instead?

Anecdotal question:

How long does one expect the initial set of tires to last? I have a 22 F150 with 81K miles and am only on my second set of tires - still a lot of tread left, too. I do a lot of highway miles, and am pretty easy on the gas from a stoplight. The factory tires have been good to me both on the 2019 I had and this one.

If that includes, all $ in, and balancing and installation... yes... too much. $200 too much.

The total amount I paid was $1,883.02. Discount Tire alleges that if I find a cheaper price within the next 30 days, that they will refund any difference I over paid. So where were you able to find the price for $200 less? I would definitely like to take advantage of that.

This doesn't sound bad to me. I don't think I have gotten of Discount tire for less than 2500 for a set of good A/T tires on my SD trucks. The tires alone are over 2k, once you add in certs, fees, etc....well past 1800. The ones in the OP are listed at 515 a piece.....no? 1800 seems like a steal. Am I missing something?

Tires on cars/trucks from dealers vary, but lots of times they are "lot" tires and much softer than ones you're gonna buy from almost anywhere else. Meaning the tread will wear down much more quickly than the 2nd set you get.

Aka low bidder to Ford/GM/toyota etc.

Same tire but less compounds that help tread life. Sometimes the manufacturer will provide normal tires off the line just to get the business or fill the order.

Correct, Discount is pretty well known for honoring their price match guarantee.

So, with that being the case, very unlikely someone going there is getting ripped off. But I would definitely still do your due diligence to confirm.

Are you wanting the E-rated version? If so, then $450/tire + installation seems to be the going rate. Tire Rack has the XL-rated version for $356 per tire if you don't plan to be hauling heavy loads or towing heavy.

I sourced the tire x 4 on the Walmart website. I figured a few bucks more for balancing/mounting. My math found me saving at least $200.

Good luck.

I've got over 79k on original Toyos on a '22 Expedition. Still have 5-10k life left. Wondering whether to stick with them at Discount or go to Michelins at Costco

'15 Pathfinder made it to 76k on original rubber. The replacement Michelins have 102k on them so far.

Made it to about 40k on Transforce on truck but had sidewall damage. Replaced the set as I needed 3PMSF tires anyway then, but they had a lot of life left too.

I got real lucky and while I was at Discount someone traded in brand new ones with under 100 miles. The manager told me 1k bucks and they're mine with lifetime warranty.

What sucks is that the guy that traded them in got about 75 a piece for them as trade in credit. Not a bad return for DT.

Yikes. Haven't bought LTXs in a while but they are best in my limited GMC 1500 experience. Bought a different brand once and it was a mistake.
