Thanks. The first couple pics are from yesterday on the Cabot Trail in the NE tip of Nova Scotia. Amazing forested mountains overlooking the ocean.

What did you have to do paperwork wise in order to drive into Canada?

No paperwork, but they really hassled me with 30 minutes of extra questioning before they agreed to let me in. They were very suspicious that I just had a generic idea of some places I might go, and not a fully planned itinerary. At one point I had to show them my LinkedIn on my phone.

Getting back across today was super easy. Took maybe 10 minutes because I was the third car in line. Pretty opposite experience from crossing between San Diego and Tijuana. 0 minutes to get into Mexico, as they never stopped me, but 4-5 hours in a line of cars to get back to the US unless everyone in the car had a Sentri card.

I've driven into Canada 3 times - Niagara Falls just after 9/11(Tuesday after the Red, White and Blue out game in 2001), Windsor in 2003 and Vancouver in 2010 but those were either in a rental car or as a passenger.

I've also gone through the San Ysidro border crossing coming from Tijuana but that was way back in 1990.

When I was living in LA, I heard stories from friends who have taken 0 minutes to enter Mexico but 3+ hours to get back across the border. Looks like they now have San Ysidro wait times posted on a web site.

What I'm most curious about bringing your vehicle into Canada, did they require any extra insurance or registration paperwork?

No extra insurance or papers. I read that Canada and the US have an agreement where each one's insurance is still valid in the other country. Much different than Mexico, where you have to buy special Mexican insurance for like $75 for a weekend.

Thankfully I never needed to use it in a dozen or so trips down. Almost did one time when I got doors deep on a flooded dirt road, but the Rubicon 4 High managed to get me to a high spot where I could U-turn and power back through it.

Also, the wait times on the app are bull***** It is always longer. I've gone to Otay or Tecate before based on the app saying it was only an hour and then sat there for 5 hours after driving further.

Technically you are supposed to print out the Canadian version of your insurance card and keep it with you, but in practice your US proof of insurance is fine. I was able to ask State Farm for one and they sent me a PDF to print out.
