Bad catalytic converter on car under 100k miles

I had an emissions systems problem code P0430 pop up on my 2020 Odyssey. Said it was on bank 2 (radiator) side. Took it into the shop hoping it was O2 sensor and they told me the 2 front catalytic converters are the issue. Will be over $5000 in parts but apparently there are none in stock, all on back order.
Seems strange to have a cat issue at 96k miles. Is there something else to try or do they fail this early?

Edit- didn't mean to use the heart emoji

I'd get a second opinion for sure. And $5k is nucking futs.

Any loss of power? If the car runs fine but the code persists I'd look into O2 sensor spacers.

Car runs fine otherwise
Only thing I have noticed is when I use the remote start it will start up for about 2 seconds and then turn off

some cars disable the remote start when there is an engine code.

probably just a fail safe that will clear up when the issue is resolved.

Yep bonus is the auto stop doesn't work either so I can stop pressing that button every time I start the car

If it is the cats, might we worth seeing if Honda will do a goodwill repair or cover part of the cost. Emissions component warranties are usually a lot longer than the standard warranty, and Honda covers the cats for 8yrs/80k miles

When my Tundra cats got stolen, the dealership quoted $8k so I got OEM off RockAuto for $800 and paid a shop $200 to install. Could've done it myself but the manifold bolt holes started to strip.

Could also probably get generic cats like MagnaFlow.

Same. Road trip to Houston for a kids sports tournament. Bunch of cars got hit at the hotel. One guy paid close to $6K to a automotive chain. I had a friend that hooked me up with an aftermarket option that was a little over a grand. Been fine ever since.

The meth heads got me at the gym in Katy at lunch in broad daylight

I have looked around and there are aftermarket options or even used options from salvage yards for much cheaper.
I'm more concerned that the 2 front cats went bad at 96k miles. Seems really short. But then everything has gone out early on this van so maybe par for the course.

Call the dealer. You might get a good will repair from Honda.

If not, do the O2 spacers, clear the code and move along. I had the same on my 2000 Odyssey, did the O2 spacer, cleared the code and it still passed emissions just fine. Honda is known to set their sensors kind of tight.

I'm not on good terms with the dealer by me. Tired too many times to screw me over.

This morning I turned it on and the code was gone. I had filled up 2 days ago and when this happened I put the car in econ mode.

Not sure if I had a bad tank of gas or if econ mode had anything to do with it.

I did find some used 37k miles cats on ebay and bought them in case it comes back. I will look into the O2 spacer as well.

I'm sure those stolen ebay cats will work just fine

They look like they were cut with a sharp blade. Should be easy to weld on

Leave your car parked in the hood. Let them steal the bad cats and insurance will replace with new ones.

LOL,

Had my original 190,xxx mile, 18 year old Cat stolen in Albuquerque off my 2004 V-10 Excursion in 2022.

If they hadn't cut my transmission lines while doing it, it would have been a good deal for me.

That and the fact I was on vacation at the time.

The cats i were told were bad are the 2 front ones that are between the engine and the radiator. If they want to still them they are going to need more than a sawzall or at least a few more blades.

Plus side - you got to drive around a straight piped V10 for a bit

Unfortunately, the transmission lines prevented that.

Was awesome when I started it up, but the large puddle of fluid it pumped on the ground put a quick end to that.

I had a friend with a shop in town who towed it in and fixed everything at the same time.

Looking at the diagrams from Honda, and also my experience with other transvers V6 engines, there is only one CAT on each bank, then a the exhaust from each bank combines into a single pipe, then a single cat on that combined exhaust.

I'm not sure why the shop would tell you that you have two bad Bank 2 (front) cats. There is only one CAT on the Front Bank and then a second after they combine.

https://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/v-2020-honda-odyssey--ex-l--3-5l-v6-gas/exhaust--exhaust-components

where the "2" is in that diagram is where the front/rear bank cats connect to the single pipe. That final blob on Part "1" is the final CAT in the system.

The second image is the CATs coming directly off the exhaust manifold.

So 1 CAT of each bank, then a single CAT after the front/rear exhaust combine. Total 3 CATS.

The way you're describing what the shop is telling you reads like you have two CATS on each bank for a total of 4. I don't think that's correct.

Seems like they want to replace both front cats even though only one is throwing a code.

These are the parts
18180-5MR-A01 - Genuine Honda Converter Assembly, Front Primary https://share.google/zrXLPgUV5YokgZjF1

18280-5MR-A01 - Genuine Honda Converter Assembly, Rear Primary https://share.google/KLwJKLRk8EBBwQrso

But looking and thinking about it i think I just need the bank 2 (front) cat.

Last week was tough. Had to put down our dog suddenly, the next morning heard our Airbnb for the ND game got flooded and was canceled, then that afternoon the check engine light came on.

Do the spacer thing. $1,600 is ridiculous for a CAT on a car with only 100k miles.

Or try another dealer. How far over the 80,000 mile emissions warranty are you? No way those parts should fail before 100k.
