2013 F150 SCrew Lariat with the 4.2" LCD screen.

What's the best option to upgrade to something with CarPlay? I'll be handing this truck over to my son soon and I Want wired CarPlay at a minimum but would prefer a wireless system).

I bought and installed an aftermarket option off Amazon called Seicane…it's a huge screen that replaced the LCD and CD player but seems like poor quality). I'm planning to return it once I have a new option to install.

Thanks!

Check out crutchfield. You can get all the wiring, bezels, etc and they have pretty solid customer service if you have a question.

I installed a Pioneer 2660 NEX five years ago and it has been solid. I don't think you can go wrong with that brand. I bought a display model from Best Buy for half price, but Crutchfield is a great option.

The aftermarket Android tablet based units are hit or miss.

I have some in my older vehicles including our now sold 2018 Expedtion. This unit was able to retain fordpass and Sync3.

You can also retrofit a Ford 8" screen with a new APIM but it just won't be as flashy or have wireless CarPlay.

Here's my son's tundra with a 10" android screen.

This. They're my go-to.

They have lots of options, provide step-by-step instructions, and you talk to a real person if you need help along the way. For like $10, you can have them send you pre-prepared wiring for your unit/vehicle...ready to just plug and play. They also have the housing available for the new unit, for your vehicle, for very cheap.

One thing i'd mention...pay attention to whether or not it's wireless carplay, or if you have to plug in the phone when selecting/ordering (if that matters to you). It's not always clear.

I use a wireless adapter in my vehicle that has plug in car play. Works great and got me to where I don't care if wired carplay is installed.

Wireless is best for less clutter and just works when phone is in pocket.

2014 F150 - XLT here
I had the exact same 4in screen in mine.

I went with the Maestro center replacement and an 8in Alpine double din unit. I still have HVAC knobs but the tuning and volume knobs went into the screen unit. Also lost the CD player.

Wired vs wireless will depend on the head unit you select.

one of our vehicles has the same thing. works well and lets you charge your phone.

But if he's buying a new unit from Crutchfield...might as well get wireless.

I did Crutchdield and paying for the pre wired harness was 100% the way to go. Installation only took a couple of hours.

Awesome! I did the same with my 2013 gmc sierra. Only regret is I went a little cheap on the unit, should have picked something a bit more high end. Wireless CarPlay is also definitely the way to go.

Update:

I first bought an amazon option called Seicane. It had a huge Tesla-style screen but it wasnt compatible with the OEM Ford Sync system so I lost power to the center console USB HUB, SiriusXM radio antenna, and original bluetooth speaker. The Seicane option also had a poor FM antenna so getting AM channels was poor.

I looked into Crutchfield but almost every option would reduce the actual screen size from the original 8.25" screen to a 6.5" screen. The after-market options did not support the Ford Sync system so again no power to center console USB hub. And the units all came with a $500 increase for harnesses which felt high.

I ordered a 2013 Ford F150 Carplay upgrade from intelligent1tech.com which included new screen and APIM module. They advertise as a full OEM replacement but I'm sure its a Chinese knockoff (advertised 20 day delivery window pretty much confirms it). But the site had great reviews for Ford/Lincoln part upgrades. The new audio unit was an exact fit to replace the OEM audio unit so I was able to keep the woodgrain trim piece, it retained all existing Ford features including voice command bluetooth speaker, power to console, rear camera, etc. It is advertised as a match to a 2023 ford screen display and the navigation is a 2023 update. I also had to upgrade my center console USB hub to a newer Ford USB hub that was carplay-enabled.

Unit cost me $700 (which includes all harnesses, and USB hub harness). I opted to pay an extra $100 to retain navigation (probably a waste since I'll be using apple or google maps now with carplay). I also paid an additional $100 for a dongle to make the carplay wireless. $900 was still cheaper than most crutchfield options and keep the Ford OEM look.

One more thing that was throwing me off....my Ford F150 window sticker showed a 4.2" LCD but I actually had the 8.25" touchscreen.

I'm not sure if Ford used to label the size of the screen as the height of the unit versus a diagonal measurement of the screen or if the truck just didnt match the sticker details for some reason.
