Here we go. Shifts hard from 1 to 3. Lags from 6-7 and 9-10. What will the repair be. Once it is warmed up no shift problems at all. It's under ford extended warranty. Also not low on fluid now. It wasn't showing on the dipstick off or running so I added about a quart to get it to the 6 level. There is 64k on the vehicle. Thanks for any input.

After driving one in my work truck the first thing I would do if I owned one personally would be get it and the engine tuned. I hate that transmission from factory.

Get it fixed under warranty and sell it before warranty expires.

Apparently you're supposed to do a partial drain and fill every other oil change which is for the birds. Of course Ford makes no mention of this suggestion.

Take it in and document. You may have CDF issues.

Had my '21 expedition transmisison replaced at roughly 50k. Take it in and get a paper trail started.

Getting my 2022 (95,000 mile) 10R80 MHT repaired with updated CDF drum and valve body right now. Get yours checked out because it is $7,000-$9,000 outside of warranty.

Ford began using transmissions with the revised CDF in August 2022 for future reference.

Have 113,000 on mine and pull boats and trailers a lot. Have had no issues at all.

Boat racing is like a beautiful woman.......expensive, high maintenance, but well worth the fun!

Ford is stalling on my premium warranty through them right now. If they deny I'm going to really be pissed.

I was referring to the other person that posted that the ATF should be changed every other oil change.

With the advent of these low viscosity transmission fluids, they tend to discolor very easily. The one I drained out of our Ford expedition was totally black, but when I sent it into the lab for diagnosis and analysis, they said the fluid was actually OK. Right at 50,000 miles. I plan on servicing them more frequently than not. But not at every other oil change. More like a 30 to 45,000 mile interval.

I just bought a 2024 with 25k miles.

Is the partial drain and fill every 30-40k all that ever needs to be done for transmission maintenance? What about filter replacement? I have no clue.

I'd do the filter at 100K or 120K.

The 10R80 has a two stage filter that has coarse and fine particles. The ones I have removed at 100K are remarkably clean. It's really the additive package replenishment that is important..

Additive packet? Is that something you just add when doing the drain and fill?

Package. The additives that are in fresh fluid. But I do add lubegard platinum in when I change fluid. Even my fleet customers. I have some 10R80 knocking on 295K miles.

According to CactusThomas?

No one serious- it's just hyperbole. I maintain mine by replacing the valve body and torque converter every 30,000 - 100,000 miles. My third one (across two vehicles) is giving me trouble currently. Extended warranty worth every penny.

So, if hunting to buy a used 1, what do you recommend? 2019-2024 Lariat & up.

Thanks! If you have a shop in the Houston area, let me know.

I'm at just over 30k on my 2022 f150 with 3.5l, maybe 8k miles of this is towing a 3000# camper.

Is pulling the pan to drain then refill the ATF the recommended maintenance?

I use Tommie Vaughn for my service and oil changes.

Is this a quick lane job or service dept?

My previous 2009 f150 had torque converter shutter issues that cropped up in mountain town in CO and hoping to avoid that again by staying up to date on my maintenance.

I don't know the ends and outs of it but 2024 allegedly has an improved design. I would stick with that model year.

No shop in Houston. My shop is in South Tx and we do pumps, compressors, turbo machinery.

1ags has perfected the partial drain and fill using a pump at the fill tube. You are wise to do it now at 30,000.

Ford redesigned the CDF drum of the 10R80 transmission to include a retaining lip that prevents bushing movements. It seems to have fixed the transmission issues. This design change was implemented for builds after August 15, 2022. You'll want to check the specific date of manufacture if you are looking at a 2023 model. See TSB: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2024/MC-11006772-0001.pdf

Drain and fill is not bad. I use a Vevor pneumatic 2-way pump, though some use electric. Since you can only get a portion of the fluid out by the method, you will need to do it multiple times to get a full exchange of fluid.

How relevant is this to the 10R80 MHT? I feel like I may be experiencing some of the same symptoms...

There is a related prior TSB mentioning the MHT:
